Bought a new netbook with windows 8 on it on Thursday and i been fighting with this dog since Thursday , to set it up with all my connections.
Wifi sorted now trying to get it to use USB tethering on my galaxy note 3 , so i can use the note 3 as a modem .
Unfortunatly i am stuck with windows 8 , is 8.1 any better than 8 ?? .

Can you not just enable the wifi hotspot on the phone and connect to the phone using wifi?

EDIT: And yes, 8.1 adds a few nice UI improvements amongst other things. Nothing to write home about tho, and nothing that will likely change what you are currently having problems with.

I will do that if i cant get it to work with the USB , but that is not ideal for me because while it is tethered with the USB it will be charging at the same time.

what you need to do is upgrade your OS to windows 7 pro or ultimate.no jokes

Plug in usb cable while hotspot is on :p

You may need to install drivers to get it tethered. I personally think that Kies is utter garbage, so see if windows itself can fetch the necessary drivers before going the Kies route

Gotcha. Makes sense. What happens when you enable USB tethering on the phone? Nothing at all?

Guy at game where i bought it said if i change the OS my warranty is void.

Really? Who is the warranty with? That would surprise me if true. Not that i'd change OS. There will be a solution. What I would do is upgrade to 8.1 when you get a chance though. Seen as you are on 8, it makes sense to give it the face lift and install 8.1. There are small things that make life more pleasant.

I actually don't find 8/8.1 all that bad. Been using it for a few weeks now and it gets the job done. I definitely preferred the old Win 7 interface but this isn't a total clusterfsck of fail like I thought it was going to be.

8/8.1 rocks. Give it time to get used to the changes and you won't want to touch 7 again. Seriously!

I picked up an XPS13 last week and it had start8 already installed. Drove me nuts. Got rid of it pretty quickly.

Just give it a chance ...

:)

It just wants to share folders and files.

I had a look around online, and it seems you are not alone. Doesn't look like any one solution works for everyone either. Apparently there are some tethering apps which can help, not sure what they do though, or how successful they might be. Seems I don't have an answer for you:/

Hope you get it sorted.

Man I cant stand metro. Once you get back to classic desktop and get rid of all touch screen features it's okay again.

On my netbook with Windows 8.1 and a LG C660 I have to first make sure that tethering is enabled (Wireless & Networks > Tethering > check USB tethering). Then I have to download the drivers and install them.

Then I right-click the network icon > Network and Sharing center > Set up new connection > Internet > Dial-up > Type in *99# and whatever the details of your network user/pass is and then click next and allow it to dial out using the phone. Windows 8/8.1 is reasonably smart enough to figure out that when you're dialing a connection as opposed to PPPoE that it should use the 3G modem/phone for the connection.

If you don't need any of the tweaks to Modern UI, you don't really need to install 8.1 at this point. Windows 8's network controls were actually a lot more advanced and I wished that I'd stayed on that.

So today this dog wants to go to windows store and wont take no for an answer , and does not show on task manager .
Modem not connected so it could not do that , after trying to go there and seeing the computer is not connected to the internet .
POS version of windows , this is the worst version of windows i have ever used , it may be fast but it is not made for PCs and south African environment ( expensive data ).

BTW running a 3G modem on this thing now .
One of those geeko ones from Esquire , just plugged it in and away it went , thought i would have problems with the drivers but did not.
