I'm asking for help for a friend who's PC suddenly refuses to boot into Windows 8 Pro 64bit. Looking into the BIOS I've noticed that the drive no longer picks up as a UEFI drive but just as a normal drive. Any ideas why?

Boot using the Windows boot CD, recovery tools (or whatever they call it).

Flatspin's idea should work or repair the install but you should tell your friend to rethink having windows loaded on a massive drive.

True, but it is always good to have all other stuff on separate physical drive. Besides, older drives <500GB tend to be more reliable.

Sadly, the drive had to be formatted. Yes it was in GPT mode. Should the drive be partitioned to prevent this from happening again?
It has to be partitioned, no other choice.
Windows 8 cannot use a 3TB partition.
I think 2TB was the limit?

No what should happen is you get a drive specifically for windows, games and apps only, 500gb would be fine, if there is some cash to burn a 128gb perhaps even a 64gb sdd would be ideal. Then you have the 3tb as your storage drive and you should also ensure you have an external hdd or a drop box account to ensure important info is not lost.
Don't use a single drive to host windows and your data. Data should never be stored on your c:/(no huge drive partitioned) dedicated hdd.

Thanks for the advice. My setup is a 2TB drive split 60/40. Windows and programs on one partition and storage on the other. So far Windows 8 has been behaving on my system
