Hi,

I recently reloaded ("reset") a windows 8 machine.

I am now trying to download the updates on it but it does not do anything.
Check on my firwewall and there is absolutely no data transfer from the machine.
Internet is working fine on it but updates don't.

I have tried the following:
Removed all the asus bloat.
Removed McAfee.

Renamed the SoftwareDistribution folder.
SFC /Scannow
Turned "Download over metered connections" on.

Left it on overnight for a scheduled update.

While typiing the above I turned Turned "Download over metered connections" off and on again, it started downloading updates for around a minute.

My advice is:

(1) Try and get to a point where you can use a fixed line connection -- ADSL, whatever.
(2) Make sure ALL the configuration settings are correct on the device in win 8. Then wait! It takes some time for updates to come though at the best of times. Do not assume that the process will be quick, there at just too many variables to contend with.
(3) In a hurry? then do not rely on the auto update process at all --- go to MS and find where you can download the updates manually.

The worst thing you can do is to continually swop connections.

I would like to have full control over downloads, what to download and when.
If Microsoft wants to decide and take control over, I wish them luck, but they mustn't try it on me.

100% agree. I do most updates under my own control, when I want to and where.

I generally avoid any form of a wireless connection for updates, unless there is no other option available. Mostly though, updates can delayed until a fixed line connection is available.

Yesterday till today around 30 hours on a fibre connection. No updates at scheduled time.

The 3g router was to see if there is some issue with the fibre

I'll download roll ups next

So on 3g, set scheduled update for 12pm
Now it's installing update 3 of 150

Obviously something on the fibre it does not like.

No, all it means you have inadvertently sorted out some or other configuration issue you failed to find before you selected the 3G connection.

I don't know, only thing I did was try a bunch of things restart while plugged into the fibre and it failed.

Plugged it into the 3g router, restarted now it is working.

As myself and SA Junky have indicated,

Go the manual route, do not rely on the auto update process. And work on a decent connection.

Check out if you are not having issues with connectivity (even minor ones).

Zero connectivity issues. Think it's the Asus bloat that did something to it.

I loaded windows 8 on VirtualBox and updated that just to see. No issues at all.

Anyway, it's still reverting.

Currently doing an upgrade to the new WIN 10 on one PC, and reverting another one for a friend back to window 8.1.

Going fairly smoothly. The upgrade is a clean install. The "revert" is on line.

Aaaand "Failure configuring windows updates"
Reverting changes.

After this I let it run through the updates again and after a few more hiccups I am finally at the point where I am downloading the 8.1 update.

Glad that you have made progress.

The Win 8 and then upgrade to win 8.1 on the PC completed without hiccups yesterday, but took a very long time, more than 10 hours I think. I need to see what other way is available for the future ....

Yea this thing comes with an install partition.

Going to 8.1 then 10 then see if I can get the 10 install into the install partition
