Windows 8 poll reveals that demand is low

Windows 8 convinced me to migrate back to OS X. There I know what I have. With Windows 8 - after several days of use - I am still confused with the half-this-half-that product. With Apple it is iOS on teh one side and OS X on the other. Yes, they will converge more and more, but not as messy as Windows 8. Windows 8 is having an identity crisis of note.
 
Installing Windows 8 on your PC = Making your PC look like a mobile.
 
I just ignore the Metro crap. I use the desktop and it works pretty much like Windows 7, apart from the missing Start menu, which I'll add back with a 3rd party program.

The Metro (or whatever it's called now) interface is just awful on a desktop, but at R130 for a full Pro version it's easy to just look past.
 
I feel like Microsoft took a step back when it came to the design of the desktop interface. It looks like something that fit in just before windows vista and windows 7. Windows 7 still looks way better in my opinion.

I am impressed that Microsoft are offering the upgrade to windows 8 at an affordable price. But I would only consider upgrading after the first service pack is released. That way, I will be sure that any issues will be ironed out.

I also suggest waiting to ensure that hardware manufacturers develop better drivers for most of the hardware such as graphics cards, printers etc. I was one of the early adopters for Windows 7 and was not impressed at the quality of drivers back then. Nothings worse then upgrading and finding out that your software and games are not fully compatible (especially older games where compatibility mode doesn't even work) It would also be good to check that all 3rd party apps are compatible before taking the leap to upgrade.

Im pretty happy with it. First version of Windows I have ever personally paid for with my own cash. And I have been using Windows since 3.0. Pretty happy with this upgrade. Since I have been through many upgrades I have seen the same hysteria every time there is a massive change.
 
My feelings and biases aside, who were these 1200 US people that participated in the poll? Do a poll of like 50,000 people from all over the world and you'll probably get a different result.

The problem is, by then it will be anything but "afforable." Microsoft has stated already that the $39.99/15.99 offer is just until January, after which it will be back to silly $200-levels, or in other words about R2000 in SA.

Another difference is that there was a big difference between how drivers worked in XP vs 7. 7 and 8 however are almost identical underneath, every driver I've tried has worked perfectly, even though they were written for Windows 7. In the case of my Xonar sound card, the driver actually works better under Windows 8 than 7.
 
Well i might upgrade(waiting for some decent reviews) my desktop but maybe in December just because its cheaper than buying the normal retail version at +R2000 if it were not cheep to upgrade i would have skipped windows 8.

Apart from a few things why should the average person move to windows 8? It is hardly as big a difference as xp to windows 7.

Honestly i don't even use the tablet side of windows 8 and the only real difference is perhaps the slight speed advantage. There is nothing game changing about windows 8 for the desktop.

Nomnom games so explain to him how he would play dx11 games on windows xp. Might even answer your question which was a rather silly one.

Silly question.

Windows XP was more than 9 years old at that time when Windows 7 came out. Not to mention that Windows XP lacks DX10/11 support. There's little or no difference between Windows 7 and Windows 8 other than that crappy Metro GUI and the missing start button. I guess the reason people are moving to Windows 8 because it's new. That's it.

I will stick with Windows 7 until Windows 9 (which I'm sure will be vastly better than Windows 8 in terms of everything. Man, look at the pattern!!!) comes out.

Its only silly if you are intentionally being a prat.

Yes, I know about the dx11 bump. So basically his only reason for upgrading was for dx11... Most PC users that is not an issue. Very few of the PC`s out there support high end gaming. The gamers I know are willing to spend a fortune on a small speed bump. R135 for a small performance increase seems well worth it.

EDIT: I went next door to our hardware guys who are very heavy gamers, all with top performing machines. They all said they were moving to win8 for the performance boost. Most of the guys had already. I guess for these gamers speed is more important than tiles they dont like.

Stop trying to converge mobile and desktop, I don't want a stupid touch optimised UI on my desktop, I will never use a touchscreen for desktop, its retarded. At least Apple has it right on this one, OS X and IOS are separate in design but integrated where it makes sense.
 
I'm not surprised at all that demand is low. I get the feeling this launch is more of a strategic positioning for them, and they still need to line up the devices to make it really sing. It's not a concern just yet. If nobody is buying in a year's time, then it's a concern.

Then all they have to do is stop Win7 sales like they did with XP :D
 
You survey 1200 people in one country and then conclude that demand is low?

I'm sick of all these stupid statistics and polls that really are useless.

Agreed.

I had my first experience of Win8 at an Incredible Connexion shop this past weekend.

Quite frankly, I don't see what confusion people are talking about.

For instance, there are four ways through which you can toggle between the desktop and start screens, you can multitask easily in both screens and snap view is completely awesome.

I mean, who cannot put their mouse in the corner of a screen?

No matter what happens, I've made my decision. My next PC will be a Win8 PC and it will be a convertible or hybrid. Everybody else who doesn't buy one of these devices will only catch up later. This is the way to got IMO.
