Windows 8 upgrade special pricing announced

Nice offer from MS.

I am still on XP on my netbook - they should come out with an offer for me LOL.
 
I believe that the price for Windows 8, which will include the actual DVD, will be about $70 - round about R580. This will make the operating system affordable for the first time. It's just a shame that this price will only be applicable to Windows 8 and not previous OS's.

I think thats great,I will now gladly buy the original even for my home pc,I use original windows at our business but for messing around on my laptop i upgraded from vista with a downloaded version of windows 7,at R580 they will get my business for my home usage also whereas previously I would never have paid over R1000 for an OS so IMO opinion MS will definitely be getting more customers with this new strategy.

I'm even considering upgrading all our business pc's from xp to windows 8.....just that our accounting package is DOS based and according to our IT guy its gonna be a donkey to get working right :(

Due to European Market requirements, there are N versions which exclude Media Player and for these there is a downloadable Media player.

And Enterprise which is the same as Pro but with a couple of extra features.
I think this was a good move though. All those different editions just confused the people.
 
Already running win8 pro on my laptop (activated :D), a lot better than the initial releases!
 
looking at Microsoft history I'll be waiting for Windows 9 :-)....

Windows 98 - good,
Windows Millennium - poor - dud,
Windows XP - good,
Windows Vista - poor - dud,
Windows 7 - good,
Windows 8 - ??? by history probably a dud.

If your current PC is running any of the three latest Windows operating systems, you'll be able to upgrade to Windows 8 for $39.99. Microsoft has said these users will be able to digitally download the next operating system upon its release. If you want, Microsoft also says it will ship you a backup DVD with the operating system for an additional $15 plus shipping and handling. And just like the other option, this upgrade is only available until Jan. 31.
 
How many incarnations are there of Win 8?

I take it there will be a default Home and Pro version, any other versions?

If they offer to upgrade Win 7 Home Basic to Win 8 Home (non basic, if that makes sense) then they finally got their act together, if I had a Win 7 licence lying around I would pay the R130-00 odd for that upgrade and I'm a dedicated Linux fanboy.

Any idea what the DSP price on Win 8 will be?

I bought my Windows 7 notebook last year. This means i qualify for the 39.99 upgrade right? Where do i sign up?

Microsoft has added a new user license for Windows 8. Dubbed the Personal Use License for System Builders, this license is designed for folks who build their own PCs or who want to run Win8 in a virtual machine. It's the first time Microsoft has acknowledged DIY system builders formally. With previous versions of Windows, enthusiasts have had to spring for the full retail version or use an "OEM" flavor meant for vendors who sell pre-build systems, not individuals who build their own.

ZDnet has snippets of the EULA defining the new Windows license. Microsoft has reportedly simplified this user-agreement document, replacing the legalese with "simple, easy-to-understand language." It's about time.

OEM copies of Windows have traditionally been cheaper than retail-boxed versions, but Microsoft hasn't revealed specifics about Win8 pricing just yet. Let's hope the usual OEM discount extends to the personal-use license. ZDNet reckons Windows 8 will cost less than its predecessor overall and that the personal-use and upgrade licenses will be inexpensive because Microsoft plans to sell them directly to consumers, sans retail packaging.

We already know Microsoft will be offering $40 Windows 8 Pro upgrades for a limited time after the OS's release. A "source familiar with Microsoft's plans" quoted by The Verge claims the full version of the Win8 Pro will cost $70 until January 31, after which the price will shoot up to $200. For reference, retail copies of Windows 7 Pro have a $300 list price and are available for as little as $265 right now. The OEM version costs about half as much.
