Windows 8: What can you expect?

Didn't expect 128Bit CPU and OS to be released this quickly, have to wait and see

Little silly to be thinking about win 8 from a consumer point right now.

I agree support for 128bit should be in, however not for all the releases, like just for the ultimate/business products, but still seems like a LOT of work for an 1% market use.

64bit is still Years away, think about it, how many apps really support it. i only have CAD 2010 which does, no games yet, oh and office will support it (2010)

That's nonsense, you ain't gonna see a 128bit cpu from intel or amd soon. People are not even on the 64bit bandwagon yet.

There is no need to go 128bit for a very long time.

Look at the gaps between 8bit -> 16bit -> 32bit -> 64bit and you will see it gets longer each time.

Given enough time and money, Microsoft will re-invent Unix - Slashdot quote.

64-bit applications is not even commonplace yet, why the push for 128-bit? Just to say, "We did it first?".

More bulk, more code, more fluff, more RAM, more powerful CPU's. M$ is already writing off Windows 7 - not to mention 'Vista' lol.

Imo the 128bit is too much, there will be serious problems when it comes to drivers and that fact that most computer users today still use 32it systems,

Agreed with Nod, I think Microsoft are just trying to make a statement with it, but we all know that it's most likely going to fail..(64bit WinXp) / (Vista) ect.. I'm starting to ask myself if I seriously have to start paying R1000 every 3 years for OS's...but then again, no one really expected Windows 7 to be around for long due to the fact that its simply a service pack of Vista sold as a whole new OS.

Bill Gates? Is that you?

2012 is quite a distance. I'm convinced amd and intel will start showing 128bit. Most probably because there are allot of people that will want the latest and greatest. Games that dont support 64 bit is going to become a thing of the past. Virtual machine hosted applications will become the more common thing. That will automaticly take care of 128 bit support. But it's all just speculation... kinda like the article :)

Won't happen on a large scale (and neither will 64bit) for the home user until Intel stop selling Celerons and that isn't going to happen anytime soon. They make a killing off of those things.

I mean you can't buy a 32bit AMD CPU anymore, but Intel cranks those things out like tic-tacs.

The bits in question here are MEMORY ADDRESS bits. Lots of things inside your computer are already beyond 128bit, like the memory data bus and your graphics card data bus.

Most 64-bit microprocessors on the market today have an artificial limit on the amount of memory they can address, because physical constraints make it impossible to support the full 16.8 million terabyte capacity. For example, the AMD64 architecture has a 52-bit limit on physical memory and currently only supports a 48-bit virtual address space[1]. Still, that represents 4 petabytes and 256 terabytes respectively.

I was going to say Bill Gates what the hell are you guys thinking at Microsoft.... I cant stay ahead to go and write new exams all the time to stay up to date with my MS qualifications

Calling me Bill Gates is something I would take as a compliment. He has done a lot more than anyone else for modern computing as we know it today. The mistakes he made? If you are not making mistakes then you are clearly not working.

voice commands- imagine how practical that will be in a typical open plan office...

I envision three hundred people looking at frozen screens, screaming ctrl alt del, and the secretary screaming above the noise.. "the ten of diamonds to the the Jack of clubs, the... jack... of... cluuuuubs"

Windows 8: What to expect?

Voice interaction and 128-bit support? Microsoft is already looking at Windows 7's successor

I just cracked up when I read 128-bit. ROFL

I mean COME ON, who the hell is going to fall for that right now? 128bit of what? 128bit means how much memory you can address. Maybe it would make sense in some kind of cloud computing cluster application. But how will this help the average Joe with his 32bit process with 64bit extension which only comes with 36bit addressable memory controller anyway. I mean FFS.

36bit gives you 64GB of addressable ram on your PC. Lets say everybody can put more than 64GB in 2012. Just up it to the next step, in according to Intel's roadmap. Lets say they bump it to 46bit, that will result in 65TB of addressable memory! Now just imagine what 64bit will give you. How the .... is 128bit going help you more?

pffft PR Stunt

windows and voice recognition - i remember that :D

Years away??? From I have heard they are writing many programs to benefit from 64bit.
