Hey guys

I'm just wondering if anyone has a decent solution for matching the 4/5 standard Windows fonts in Ubuntu? Verdana, Tahoma, Times New Roman, Arial, etc. I tried the msttcorefonts method, but that made absolutely zero difference in Firefox and Chrome - web pages still look like crap in both. Is there a solution?

core fonts aren't amazing... I don't have the exact link but I found a good solution on ubuntuforums.

They made a huge difference for me!

Make sure you've configured Firefox to allow pages to use their own fonts.

it's a package called something like mscorettf fonts.

i find the liberation fonts to be quite good as well

I must say that my internet experience looks better for some reason in Ubuntu than in Windows. Everything just looks cleaner even without MS core fonts.

Unfortunately, quite a few web developers hard code stupid ms fonts into their pages. I normally just install the ms corefonts by hand. Some sites (such as vodacom4me menus) work better with the ms fonts installed. I'll post a list of the ms fonts in my core list here if anyone is interested.

Uhm... msttcorefonts is actually Windows fonts, just repackaged for Linux...How can they NOT make a difference? Should look exactly the same as they do in Windows.

They don't, though, in any application. Even when the browser is set to allow the page to set its own fonts - it uses the bizarre Ubuntu fonts which just look mismatched and random.

Who are you responding to?

Tinuva in that instance - but I wouldn't mind knowing how you install the MS fonts by hand so I can check if mine installed properly when you have a moment.

goto /usr/share/fonts/truetype

I then create a directory msfonts and copy the fonts to this directory (most of the ms core fonts have four ttf files associated with them).

Change the permissions on the directory msfonts and each of the font files so that it is also read only for group and others.

I prefer this way, instead of using msttcorefonts, as I know exactly where and which ms fonts I have installed.

BTW, msttcorefonts has been replaced by ttf-mscorefonts-installer under Ubuntu 9.10

Alternatively, copy the MS fonts (from within Windows) and place them in your Ubuntu .fonts folder (hidden folder in your home folder. I also sometimes just run this in terminal thereafter: sudo fc-cache.

Sometimes it may be required to logout and log back in to see the newly copied fonts.

Hope this helps,
S
