Windows Home Server vs FreeNAS

Just read about the Windows Home Server RC1 that's been out for a while now, seems interesting. Which one would be better, though, FreeNAS or Windows Home Server?

I've already set up a full-blown FreeNAS server on our LAN with just about every service enabled for only 20MB hard drive space total, while Windows Home Server seems to take 10GB hard drive space just for itself...

Should I switch to Windows Home Server or not?

It all depends on the services you need to run.

Are you looking for file storage or domain services ???

You need to take a look at the application and remember MS = $$

If I had to decide which to use, I'd pick FreeNAS. You can always add more services if you want to, run a web server if you want to. There isnt much that Windows Home Server RC1 could possibly bring to the table what FreeNAS doesn't. Why try and fix something that isnt broken?

Does FreeNAS make clone images of the drives of other machine over the network for backup purposes?

If you really want to, and you can write the scripts... then yes.

I'd stay away from features like a schedueled back up of drives over a network. Especially if you download files at weird times, and forget when the server does the backup. I always create the image client side and copy over to the server. More work involved, but it works as planned.
