I have been trying to use the above products to reduce the cost of telephone calls. If my wife needs to contact me at work she will use Messenger (she will send me a message, no voice or video is used). The problem is she gets disconnected continuously. We have tried Windows Messenger (the one that is installed with Window XP), MSN Messenger and now Windows Live Messenger. I have checked the router, and its not being disconnected. What I have noticed is a high amount of crc errors on the upstream portion of my adsl. I have the telkom router (yes I know), a 1MB ADSL connetion, and currently SAOL is my ISP. I actually had the same problem with the 384 connection I started with. Any ideas on what is causing the disconnections??

if you're using an updated version of MSN - lets say you're on MSN Live Messenger. make sure you remove the old MSN from the startup - infact, find the directory and DELETE it - its likely that its starting up in the background and causing the newer version to shut down. they tend to fight for connectivity after each minute - thus the disconnections.

As for your CRC errors... not a clue...

I thanks for the info, this makes sense for the one computer, we had MSN Messenger installed and then installed Windows Live Messenger. But on another computer we only have Windows Messenger, the version that is installed with Windows XP, and we get the same disconnection problems

interesting..

is your router in Bridge or Route mode? is it set up the wrong way like the Telkom techies set it up..? with IP addresses like 10.0.0.2..?

i would scrap Windows Live Messenger, i know a few people who have many problems with it. i still use good old MSN 7.5, no problems ever.

i'm not entirely sure, all i know is that a Telkom techie had to come back to fix it PROPERLY.. i also had many problems similar to what you're having with MSN/IRC disconnects and i also had to load many web pages twice. i was experiencing terrible packet loss. i feel sorry for those people who still use the 10.0.0.2 settings!

now that the router and PC's are setup correctly, i have no problems.

do this, go to Start -> Run, type "cmd", Enter, then type "ipconfig/all" then Enter.

then right click, click Mark, then highlight all the info, then right click again. then paste your ipconfig/all results here.

here's mine, once setup properly i think yours will be similar:

169.254.91.XXX is a rogue IP address and that could be the problem.

AFAIK, all this needs to change.. i suggest you phone Telkom and get a techie to come and set you up properly. i did and there was no charge. and he came on the day!

cheers and good luck!! :D
