Windows Passwords & Xtra HDD (Tech wizz needed)

Hi all you tech wizzzz-izzzs

If you have a Windows logon password, and you add a new HDD to your desktop internally? Does this new HDD then become part of the logon password's "reach"?

ie. If you then move it again to another desktop; will you then have access issues?

No the hard drive will not be influenced by the Windows password unless you are imaging the new HDD with a clone of the original HDD. The only other reason it would have anything to do with Windows passwords would be if you are using Bitlocker encryption on the additional drive and the OS drive

Some external USB hard drives come with encryption hardware. WD "Passport" by example. It needs to install a small application on every PC to enable access to the files. It is a separate protection from Windows login password, but you can also use Windows BitLocker (as described above), it is less secure and you need BitLocker installed on every PC and an appropriate Windows version too.

So its only the HDD that has the Windows OS on it, that is affected by the logon password?

So if you add a logon password while the second HDD is running in the box without cloning etc; it will not be affected by the logon password?

Please excuse if I am 'over simplifying', but Ive had a bad experience in the past with logon. :wtf:

It is complicated. For Windows logon you need more help I am unable to give. By example Windows Bitlocker only works on certain machines, i.e. it requires TPN ver. bla.bla.bla, a hardware security chip not present on all computers. Better to get external drive with internal encryption.

Mmm.. think I will just stick to my old rule of removing all Windows passwords before moving any HDD.
