so would like some views on this...

have the mirosoft surface RT, and its serving me quite well in terms of my needs ie email, browsing and youtube.

are there anybody still using an RT device, and if yes is it serving your needs still as of now?

is it worth holding onto?

Win RT has effectively been replaced by Win 10 Mobile, which is really just Win 10 for ARM.

When they first appeared, I bought a Surface RT for an aged relative with zero computer knowledge/experience (she was over 80, never touched a PC). It's still in pretty much daily use for web browsing (set up with tiles) and Skype.

No plans to replace it. It's perfect for her as it is.

yeh i also dont think its bad for the basics, but anything else and you will struggle. the app store is pretty poor, and development seems to have stopped for many apps. That said, for things like email, web browsing and youtube/videos/music its still very capable.

what i cant understand, is why cant windows 10 mobile be ported onto the surface. the specs surely should be capable of handling it, or am i missing something

Tablets generally are content viewing devices, not ideal for actually generating stuff.

It has MS Office, a serviceable browser, and Skype. It has a USB port so can connect an external drive for media (which an iPad can't do), a pretty good display, a microSD slot for additional storage, and a detachable fold-up keyboard.

For content consumption (movies, media, web browsing) and casual work like banking and email, it's still more serviceable than most tablets out there.

What apps do you miss/need/want?

The only app i miss is Tapatalk. Most other things i do via the browser, but just miss Tapatalk. :)

But agree, the USB port is a really good thing

I have one of the first laptop with separable touch screen things with Win RT.

Sadly the touchscreen died but was good while it lasted. Only drawback was the pathetic selection in the app store.

Yeh the app store is pretty poor. But i can do most of the things via the browser, but would have liked to have seen Chrome browser, but IE works pretty well.

Ive added a game pad, and just download games for the kid. I put the game pad receiver into the USB port and it works well. Some decent games in the store still like OverKill :)

I've got the Nokia Lumia 2520 which is also a WinRT device and use it daily. Don't have loads of apps on it, but it provides loads of entertainment to the kids. I use it for various things, but it comes in really handy while streaming movies to my TV from a number websites.

Since the Netflix app works on it, the kids use it almost daily to watch something on there if the other one is watching TV and she's not interested.

Spec wise it can actually upgrade to Win10, but from what I understand Microsoft won't release Win10 for it yet. Maybe towards the end of next year or 2018, but by then I would need to upgrade as I don't think my device would be capable of running W10.

I agree, and im also enjoying my Surface RT, because i only use it for Office, Email, Browsing, youtube and a few other things like Flipboard and ESPN Cricinfo for cricket scores. Along with Netflix, its all i really need as i have my phone for all other things.

on Windows 10, Microsoft will most probably only release WM 10 on it, and not the full Windows 10 as far as i can tell.

Apparently not...

In an unexpected move, Microsoft tonight announced a major new partnership with Qualcomm to port Windows 10 to ARM. No, not Windows 10 Mobile. Real Windows 10 on a new generation of portable PCs.

I seriously doubt existing devices with ARM chips will be updated to Win10. Probably only new devices and even then, only in a year or two time.
