Hi Guys,

I have posted this thread in another section already, sorry for the duplication, but...

Does anyone know of a local WSUS server? Maybe on the IS / SAIX backbone?

Would be nice & easy if we can download Windows Update from a local server...

Many people use it, but in this case everyone who wanted to use it would have to edit their local policy and add in the update location.

The person having control of the wsus server would also be able to determin what updates get to the client machines, unless they just approved everything.

You should maybe consider just running one on your lan.

That which that admin decides NOT to approve, will just not be downloaded from WSUS.

Everything is available to the client, what's not available in WSUS, get's downloaded from Microsoft.

We run a WSUS server of the office - its only really of use if you have multiple machines to patch. There's no local WSUS server available, you will have to either update off the MS site or install WSUS (On 2000/2003 Server)

There is another alterbative

www.autopatcher.com

basically a full update package comes out once a month in a whole file which you can downlaod and apply. PLUS YOU CAN ALSO CHOOSE WHICH UPDATES TO INSTALL. INSTEAD OF IT BEING FORCED ON YOU.

We run WSUS at the office for patching servers only. It works like a dream. Approvals done on the server and the client side. The client has the final OK on what to install.

Microsoft also have a monthly download that includes all updates for that month. Never tried it so I don't know what it is like.

noxibox: the monthly updates are a waste of time. Its the monthly patches that are released in just about every single language. Its easier using windows update (or wsus if you have a bunch of machines)

www.autoupdate.com - doesnt seem to be working

Thanks, Im busy downloading the 260Mb AutoPatcher file for August. I really think the IS guys should install a WSUS server somewhere on their backbone though...

Any updates? Must say that a local WSUS server would be nice especially with the huge MS Vista updates

Ukzn Wsus server

Here are the registry entries for the University of Kwa-Zulu natal (ukzn) update server.

Supports xp and office. Vista will be supported later this year when the university moves onto vista. e-mail me and i will send you the reg entries when i have some time. [email protected]

Will try to post a link to download the file.

Wish there was one on a local backbone, would make things far easier when playing around and trying to learn. However, I don't think Microsoft lets anyone mirror their servers, for security reasons, although I could be wrong.

People have said that plain Windows Update works with local only connection, but I tried that and it most definitely did not work.

Windows update DOES work for me on local. :)

But, if anyone needs, I have the latest verions of AuthoPatcher for Office 2007, XP and Vista. If you cover my costs I can mail you a CD.
