Windows Store Apps

AlphaJohn, you know very well that it is a chicken and egg story.

I think Microsoft and partners have done quite a bit to get the numbers up onto WP. Microsoft alone is spending a billion US on advertising the tile interface a la Win8.

The question is what are you doing? Waiting for numbers?

The fact is, you both need each other but you (developers) decide to do nothing while the other party is doing something. The more apps the more people on the platform.

That is where you have it wrong. I, and I suspect others developers do not need Microsoft as much as they need me/us. I have applications in other markets as well, in fact Windows development for our company so far equates to a loss.

I get what you saying about the chicken & egg problem, its just when you run on tight budgets numbers make all the decisions for us. Note, most of our development is not for ourselves either, we code for large corporates and right now they have the same numbers problem when it comes to selecting what to take and what to cut.

Anyway we venturing off topic here in a big way and maybe this discussion needs to be pruned into another thread?

You may think that you don't need Windows (or even BlackBerry) in the short run, but, in the long run you actually do.

Why, because with a two horse race (especially if you let it) these guys will screw you over because they are the only two platforms available. With WP/Win8 as an option, these guys will be compelled to be nice to you, otherwise they loose your business. Look at the bigger picture.

Shun other platforms for the two currently dominant ones at your own peril.

It should be a thread of its own, you are right.

Developers must pay Microsoft $99 USD annually, think that's a bit of a cheek.

You are really just laying this on us out of context. Please contextualise it by telling us how much developers pay Apple and Google for the same privilege on the respective platforms.

Can anyone advise on an app that is wide and gives lots of useful notifications. My calendar is too blank (too few notifications) and I don't want to keep my pictures in the top area of my start screen, which is where I am looking for a useful wide app for.

I am really going for the aesthetics here but it would be great to have an app that actually provides useful information.

Any idea of a useful, aesthetically pleasing wide live tile app, which gives lots of notifications? It will be even better if it doesn't conform to my color theme too.

P.S. I don't want to use my 'Me Tile' either.

Coming from a S2, there are two apps im desperately missing!

First off, ES File Explorer. The inability to access the phone/pc's root directories and wirelessly transfer files around is a huge loss for me.. Secondly, Splashtop Remote Desktop. I used to be able to lie in bed and remote control the pc to manage all my downloads which i now really miss.

There are other features my lumia 920 really lacks! Like not being able to play mkv's, no quick way of turing all alerts off (unless im missing something) which is hugely annoying at night as receiving emails/text wake me up (even on vibrate) and you cannot turn the phone off while it's charging (which is every night), it will just turn itself back on!! And of course dialing phone numbers doesnt auto pick up your contacts (and personally i dont like rapdialer as it doesn't allow you to check your airtime balance)

Anyway, i really hope some apps come out to cover all those features. In terms of hardware, the 920 is brilliant but, when it comes to software/apps, i really miss my galaxy s2.

App Alert: Sandton City Mall App

Sandton City Mall - the app!

Check it out in Windows Store.

Features:
- Mall map
- View shops alphabetically or by category
- Directions to shop or toilet, incl. photo of location
- Take photo of your parked car and enter parking bay and save. This is the best part IMO.

All large malls should have an app like this.

Just a heads up.

Google Maps does this for most US Malls, also started doing it for Europe. Wish they would so the same here.

LiveTile Apps...!

For the record, I really feel that Microsoft should have renamed their UI from 'Metro' to 'LiveTile'.

With that said, that is an indication of how much I am amped about apps with live tile notifications.

Here are the ones I've got so far:
- Calendar (native app) - Max. = Wide tile
- AccuWeather - Max. = Medium tile
- XE Currency - Max. = Medium tile
- Xbox (native app) - Max. = Wide tile
- Messeging (native app) - Max. = Wide tile
- Call (native app) - Max. = Wide tile
- Yahoo! (native app) - Max. = Wide tile
- Market Place (native app) - Max. = Medium tile
- Shazam - Max. = Medium tile

What are your LiveTiles or what others would you suggest?

App Alert! 627.AM

627.AM is a weather and alarm Start screen information display app.

627.am.JPG

It is really great to use in conjunction with your weather app.

The tile graphic is not great but the good part is the detail on any size of tile.

I am using WP7.8 so perhaps that is why it doesn't have a wide tile.

Detail showing on my tiny or medium app inculdes:
- Temperature: Now
- Min to Max Temperature: Tomorrow (not shown on my AccuWeather app only today's temp)
- Alarm time: You set your alarm (only one alarm per day)
