Hi all!

I've been running Windows 7 for a while on an SSD. No problems, and it has always logged in about 2 seconds after I typed in my password on the user screen after boot.

Yesterday, for the first time, the screen stays black (with my cursor on it) for about 5 minutes, while I waited.

Following this, I tried:

  • Disk check
  • CCleaner
  • Defrag check (too low to need to run)
  • Checking startup programs
  • Antivirus scan
  • Malware scan
  • Checking 'wait for network before loggin in' was disabled
  • Multiple reboots

And yet, this morning, it has happened again. Before it started, I had not made any hardware or software changes.

Does anyone have an idea as to what may have caused this and how I can fix it? Will I need to do a system restore to a point before it started?

Thanks in advance! :)

Do you see any disk activity (light indicator on your case)? What happens when you press CTRL + ALT + DEL? PC joined to a domain or in a workgroup?

Just an update: this is a home PC, so no workgroup. After the above suggestions (thank you all) I checked the SMART status (all fine); ran defrag anyway (7% to 0%); and installed this helpful registry edit so that I could see what was stalling it.

Weirdly, it now logs on almost instantly again. Not ideal in that I have no idea what caused it or fixed it - shouldn't have been any of the most recent things I did - but glad it's working. I'll post again if it changes :P

At least you found temporary relief, let me just not get your hopes up too high, windblows will find another way to assault your pc soon, most fixes are temporary.

Welcome to windblows, where robbing you of your data is policy and hanging you out to dry while they bloat your OS is their first priority.

The stooges at m$crosuck likes to play cat and mouse, they are the mouse while you the cat, letting you dig into this dumb OS to disable all kinds of time wasting Cr@p for the hope of one day getting it to stop well... just stop wasting your time and wearing out your pc by slowing it down, just to be outrun by the dumb mouse at the end, you will get results, but the trouble will just return again, it will come back again and again, then if you are re-installing the OS all over again, you'll be thrown into the hamster wheel Again.

You're just spamming stuff now. Are you a sajunky clone?

You really shouldn’t defrag an SSD.

Turn off the Auto Defrag scheduler while you are at it.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Shortly after I installed the Win7 beta, Zuma was elected president - only stupid sheeple think that's a coincidence. With every Windows upgrade, things got worse - barely a week after Win 8.1 beta on my PCs Nenegate happened. Coincidence? Hardly. With with every Win10 iteration Zuma morphed to Zupta and state capture worsened. When the Anniversary Update was released Donald Trump got the GOP nomination. Every knowledgeable PC user knows that Win Creators Update 1703 was timed to deflect attention from the firing of Gordhan.

So glad you're exposing the Microsoft conspiracy.

Time to format c: and install something else. I'm downloading Bionic Beaver later today.

O, for sure nothing will ever stop me from exposing this lunacy. I've seen stupid evolve over 2 decades now, and the reasoning and intentions become worse by the release.

Good for you. Win 10 is a joke played on everyone except those who confuse themselves into thinking win 10 is good, when m$crosuck sneezes, they always ask how high to jump, never questioning the logic of m$crosucks stupidity. Riding the if it aint broke fix it wagon everyday.

Let me go check out Bionic Beaver, sounds like a winner.
