I'm not sure this is being posted in the right place so I hope the moderators will help me out with that but, I'v been having some problems updating my windows 7 machine to the latest patch and would sincerely like some help.

A week or so ago I noticed my security essentials was not successfully downloading the latest set of definitions. I say downloading because before it managed to get anywhere near instillation it would freeze up and not respond. I would have to use task manager to forcibly close it. It seemed at this early stage that my computer was having trouble connecting to the windows update server.

This suspicion was further confirmed by when I tried manually to download security essentials updates. My browser just couldn't load the page which hosted the manual updates for security essentials.

It was at this point that I found things really strange and wondered if my "windows update" was performing similarly. It turned out it was. I ran the "check for updates" button and waited for about 15 minutes while it searched endlessly (supposedly) for an update. In the end it stopped itself and gave me this error "8024402F".

I have system restored to an earlier state but still have had no success in updating my windows or security essentials.

Please help!

did you try up update to or install .Net 4 shortly before this started happening ?

Okay, I don't want to speak too soon but I seem to have solved my problem. It had something to do with my router and firewall blocking the update server, as well as something to do with my windows update itself being corrupted. What must have happened is somewhere along the line a previous update had been incorrectly installed or interrupted while downloading. This interruption lead to windows update getting stuck every time it entered an update cycle. I managed with a few googles to format my update history (clearing what was causing windows update to get stuck) and presto everything seems to be working now. I hope this is in someway helpful to anyone else who encounters this or a similar problem.

I had the exact same problem.

Read somewhere that you have to reset Internet Explorer's settings to the default if that is happening.

It worked like a charm.

I've been having a different problem from windows update, also to do with MSE. when windows boots its terribly slow when loading startup items and struggles to load the network service. as soon as i end the 'MSPENG.EXE' process its all fine. Until i end that i cannot even open a folder. I remove MSE and bang! the system is fine. Anyone have this lately? Its happened on 6 of our clients systems.
