We have a company policy that updates Windows and related software as follows:

  • Definition Updates: No reboot required and installs immediately
  • General Updates: Reboot could be required. Install 7 days of release.
  • Driver Updates: Reboot could be required. Install 30 days of release.
  • Feature Pack Updates: Reboot will be required. Install after 60 days of release.
My view is that this is too ‘long’ for updates to be installed (especially the last two) and software should be updated in max of 7 days, including drivers. I am of the view that updates are well tested before release and, although issues may happen, generally there are no problems in updating soonest.

Are there acceptable policies that govern what the times should be?
