I decided to use Windows update to get critical updates for XP, cause I'm creating a new image for my system. After all the updates finished, I checked my local and international bandwidth usage:
international: 1.4MB
local: 75MB

I don't know if it was cached somewhere, or if it always works like this, but could be useful if you're holding out on updates because of bandwidth shortages...

It is possible that whoever your ISP is, is actually hosting an update server ... actually makes sense, as it will push through the updates after getting it from M$, without everyone trying to download via the international links, but rather getting it locally.

I might be totally wrong of course :p

hrm.. depends. remember if its cached on untransparent saix proxy server ;) if your local is served via IS network u can't access it. I'm curious though about the case where you use IS for BOTH international and local via two accounts with routing accordingly. surely this must save some bandwidth on popular sites/downloads?
I'd do that if it weren't that i need the saix latency.

I use a SAIX international account, and an IS local account, configured with routesentry... the local account is from Webafrica, international is CS. If it was cached, I'm wondering how it switched to the local site? and which local site it was?

You can get some international on your local account in the beginning of the month, but don't see how route sentry would have routed it through the local account

I don't like some of the extra crap that comes with autopatcher... anyway I was trying to waste some bandwidth, haven't managed to get international capped for 3 months.

You can just choose not to install it, but I hear what you're saying. Far too much unneccesary stuff that comes with it.

I hardly ever get capped anyway :D

Check out Ryanvm if you want an easy way to integrate patches, updates, hotfixes and applications right into the install! Beautiful system.

Slightly OT, but maybe relevant... Is there anyway to create an update mirror on a local PC in a network to allow other networked PC's to get the updates from that one PC/Server?
We have 8 users in our network, and each machine (XP & Vista) download their own updates, waisting valuable bandwith (HSDPA). We have NOD32 setup this way, and it works a dream.

ooh very nice thanks :D
time to reinstall my virtual machines :D

Windows Update Services on any Windows server platform.

I pulled 80 MB of SP2 for Windows XP x64 through my local SAIX account a while back... SAIX local is nothing like IS's, I've tried both. On SAIX local I have never even had a sniff of international :p
