For those utilising MS's "NEW" Microsoft Update (which supposedly checks for all MS product updates) don't think it is actually doing what its supposed to be doing.

I am having problems with Outlook 2003 crashing, and going to the actual Office update site, I am being told to download almost 250Mb worth of updates.

Rather use the built in Office Update link in the Office products.

if u install a WSUS server, it'll push down updates for ALL MS products

Erm, not my area to do things like that ... but I will make the suggestion, thanks!

How can u download all the updates for a newly built XP machine without having to go through the Windows update?

Now u just need a app to install the patches for you unattended.

Landyman, that 250MB is probably the service pack for Office - worth doing.

I always download all the patches available, just to be sure. Just interesting that "Microsoft Update" - which is supposed to check for all your MS software, doesn't pick it up, but the "Office Update" does.

Hence I have no faith in Microsoft Update

I'm waiting for Microsoft to release XP SP3!

I installed XP SP2 two months ago and had to almost download 100MB of patches to get it 'up to scratch'.

Think MS said it would release SP3 when Vista gets released in 2007.

If you know the patches you require go to:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=xxxxxx replacing the xxxxxx with the numbers you wrote down.

WSUS is a wonderful solution, bit of a resource hungry app but does exactly what you want if configured properly in the app and via group policy for client pc.

Last I checked after XP Sp2 installation you would still require 63 updates/hotfixes.

XP SP3 will only be put together 2nd quarter of 2007, still a maybe, Vista is the priority.

Stick to Windows Updates cause once you installed Microsoft Updates you just can't get the bloody thing uninstalled unless you block it via goup policy. Here again WSUS a much better solution.

I only use Microsoft Update. Works 100%.
Even if just to get away with the annoying popup "Install Microsoft Update" :D
