I am stuck on Windows version 1511 it does not want to update. What could be the problem? I downloaded the perpetual single file from Microsoft 1.5gb but it says, this update is not applicable. Then microsoft support said you cannot update from 1511 to newer version because you have to use the ISO file and new install. But my work laptop upgraded automatically to version 1706 without any hassles. What can you tell me?

O.k. my SSD 30GB hard drive has less than 5Gb free space, do you think the problem lies therein? Also AMD APU A10 and 16GB DDR3 with RX380 video graphics.

Give up. Install Linux. Go have a beer. Enjoy it with friends. Be happy with your life. You will thank me later. ****. Microsoft.

Yes, but if you connect external USB drive with 16GB free space, installator will use that, so you may be lucky.

Preferable way is a clean installation by booting from ISO (refer to Rufus if you don't do UEFI boot). I suggest to use 1607 ISO, as Creators update has number of problems.

Windows 10 on the desktop requires between 16GB and 20GB free space on a drive to install itself to. You can't do an ISO upgrade because it's still an in-place update that would create a Windows.old folder. To upgrade, you'd need to back up your data, and then do a clean installation, keeping nothing in the process.

I bought a Win 10 Pro Dell-PC i7, never connect it to internet(Used for photo editing) until recently. IT was on 1511.

When connected to INternet it forcefully just updates & updates, and kept on.......
I waisted two days of bandwith with zero results. It got stuck at the update before 1706....just eating bandwith with no end in sight.

Maybe you can try this:
I then downloaded Microsoft Windows 10 update assistant, let it run and fixed problems.
I then use Win 10 troubleshooter itself for updating, on which it fixed a few problems.

The result was that it skipped the intermediate updates and went straight to 1706 without any problems then. It downloaded half a day, and install correctly, no ISO or any of that.

It worked perfectly till recently(2017-09-14) KB4038806, KB4038788 was installed, then the Win 10 Apps i dont use started to fail(Event viewer notes).
It still works well, except those Apps not opening.(Dont need them in any case).
I am now waiting for the next big update in Oct 2017 to hopefully fix those.

Shame. You should manually update from 1607 ISO file, then apply [-]KB-4025339[/-] to get to the [-]1480[/-] build level and never let automatically update Windows, drivers or built-in apps. Try to revert changes now and apply as above.

Update: See crossed KB number? KB4038782 is the latest cumulative update to the version 1607 (bringing it to the build 14393.1715). It looks like it fixed various problems introduced by poor quality updates that came out after KB4025339, which I recommended so far. Download full install from MS Catalog website: http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB4038782

You want me to go back to 1607 from 1703 and then leave it there-?

I wait and consider it after October update by Microsoft to correct problems with 1703, if they can manage it this year, thats to say.
Actually I would really like them to dump these fake apps or at lease make it possible to just normally uninstall it, leaving you with a windows PC basic like before in XP & 7. The forced-Store even if "free" does not work reliably.
