They taking some ideas from certain Linex versions by having the OP more specific to your hardware, it helps with speed thats why servers are like that as well.

That sucks big time, because I don't think Vista will bring a lot of new technologies & features to the table and I thought Vista would be cheap - it's not.

You actually plan on buying it?? :D

From what I've heard, Vista is gonna be the biggest change in Windows in like 10 years, not that that's saying all that much, but I'm sure it's gonna be quite noticeably different.

I managed to get XP to look more or less like Vista. If looks are the only thing that changed then I'd rather stick with XP.

Only difference in your screenshot is the lack of Aero, and even though people say it make little difference, it does make a difference. For instance dragging a window uses a lot less proccessor power (about 40% in XP vs 10% in Vista). That is just one example.

I know this is gonna sound lame, but I really like all the transparency in Vista, makes it look just that little bit better. Well, at the end of the day, it is every person's choice, but so far, I am really enjoying it.

It's an Aero theme with different skins based on Vista, so the Aero effects are there (maybe not as pronounced as Vista). May agree on the processing required but we'll have to wait until the final release. There's about 20 combinations that you can choose, posted a few combinations below:

The images are scaled down to fit on the screen so it appears blurry. Click on it to show it in full size :)

And the way windows open and close and minimize and maximize looks much better than in XP. :p

I have also downloaded the 'Vista Transformation Pack 4.0', now I don't have to buy Vista Ultimate!

It looks absolutely like the real thing, it's fast and I'm very impressed.

So, now I have all the eye candy of Vista, but without the driver problems.

Life's good.

Kingrob, which driver problems specifically are you refering to? If it is the iburst modem, then I really couldnt be bothered, but otherwise I have had no driver problems what-so-ever.

Besdies video drivers, which are avaliable from nvidia, all drivers that I needed were either avaliable in a Vista version, or the XP/2000 driver worked without a hitch.

My Creative Audigy2 ZS Platinum Pro & Hauppauge WinTV Theatre + Radio card - music is VERY important to me!

Also, I'm running iBurst on USB.

Vista sucks sooo bad

Ive been running Vista for a couple of weeks and what a nightmare granted its only Beta2... endless crashes and system freezes and when an ap takes to long to install or execute it tries to kill it AAAGGGHHH...stick with y2k/XP till final release or atleast RC2, you will scr3w up yer pc's drives from all the reseting and hard reseting :(....the systems i tested was dual Xeon 3.2 with 2gig's of mem 2x sata 250's and second system was 3gh ht with a gig of mem and 2x 160 gig satas. both pc's took heavy strain...ps ive been a pc techie for 8yrs+ i know my **** ;P.....................looks great though ;)
edit: --> Also navigation sucks..takes a while to get use to it.

I'm of the same opinion - stick with XP for now and wait for the release candidate of Vista.

With the Windows transformation pack by WindowsX, I got a little taste as what to expect from Vista - and I like it a lot.

Why wait?

Why wait for Vista? Most of its major features (which will not ship until some future date) are already included in OSX Tiger. Spotlight searching, simple set up, stability, firewalls that work, no significant viruses, security built in from scratch....

Then again, maybe not - wait till it is launched and compare to OSX Leopard (next major release of OSX due before Vista). Seems to me Microsoft targeted Tiger, abd won't get out of the blocks until after its been upgraded!

I had to support Apple Macs when I was contracting for Reuters in the UK - what a pain in the arse!!

The picture server Reuters used was on a Mac and the thing crashed every second day, or on a Sunday night when the freelance photographers were sending in pictures from across Britain - guess who was called out? Well, at least Reuters paid for the £25 cab fare.

*Luckily there was this Brazilian lady who worked in the graphics department, she helped me quite a lot, quite clued up and beautiful!

Oh, does OSX run Windows programs and games too? That, of course, is the no. 1 requirement for Vista...

Why not use Squid or a proxy server to cache the windowsupdate downloads?

This way you can download these to a CD, and these will also remain on the Squid cache, minimizing bandwidth usage next time something looks for an update...
