Windows Vista SP1: What do you guys think?

Have you guys noticed anything different?

All I got was that it freed up 11GB in my "C" drive
And that I can copy files 4x faster (which I really like :))

anything you guys noticed?
 
Sounds like you had a lot of temporary files
 
It screwed up my soundcard drivers on my laptop.... fixed it though with a bit of hacking.

On my media center, I'm hoping it improved speed....time will tell.
 
The 32bit version is 450mb and the 64bit version is 744mb
 
I have noticed that it stops programs that shall we say dont have the legit key or code...
I have a copy of ACDSee pro 2 with a key gen and it killed it for dead.
Uninstalled and tried again..dead again.
At 139 Dollahs us , Ill now use something else..

I don't have other non legit stuff, so can anyone else verify this ?

SP1 is 445Megs btw..

If you restart in safe mode and install the software from there it will be fine. Or so I hear?

Installed SP1 on my HP Pavilion yesterday... no performance enhancement whatsoever... but it did mess up my soundcard drivers (now sorted). Had no problems with the installation though... just took forever... close to two hours in total.
 
pretty dissapointed with this service pack, bulky and nothing to shout about.
 
I havent found any difference... :?

Just still my explorer restarts everytime i close windows explorer...
 
Well i have rolled out on my work machine, lap top and home machine and all i can say is praise the lord.

Native zip support is 1000% better.
Vista 32 now utilises all my physical RAM (4Gb)
Network copying and browsing is 1000% faster
Local copying ect is MUCH better
No issues with hacked software (just another urban legend from noobs)

Things it has not fixed and other issues
Zone alarm needed to be updated - but i suspected that
Still has the famous com surrogate failure when trying to produce previews of video thumbnails of formats it is not familiar with

Other then that all machines are great and performance increase noticeable with reagard to disk usuage.

Laptop not much difference, but then the laptop has a silly intel duo cpu.

If you use Vista worth the upgrade.
 
I agree Halicon, was thinking earlier today to post about the benefits. To be honest, I didn't have many problems pre SP1, most of my problems were due to poor drivers from manufacturers, actually 100% of my problems. What I appreciate about SP1 is the added speed and "snappiness" I can copy, open, close, reboot, shutdown and it just flies. I've installed it on Ultimate and Home Premium and it's working grand on both, no issues as of now.

I have found a freeware disk defragmenter this week and it has been mentioned on myadsl by the guys with the know how, I always thought it was too hard to use, here's part of the post from Beanie's FAQ which I sent to him today: Click on the quote to view the thread.

I think it's time that I defrag/optimize my hard drive. Do you have any recommended software to do so?
Jkdefrag is a great piece of software when it comes to optimizing/defragging a hard drive. Much better and way faster than any other commercial software out there, I used it on two Windows Vista based PCs, on the first it reclaimed about 5GB of free space, on the second, it reclaimed about 10-15GB free space. Definitely worth checking out.

One thing I'd like to add, if you defrag with JK, minimize it, it uses less CPU if you don't have to redraw and it completes faster that way.
I defragged a Vista Business pc today, it had 54GB free space, after the defrag completed it had 64GB, nothing gets deleted, it's pure file placement and better disk utilization.

Go for it ;)

What's nice about MacOS X is that you DON'T need to defrag unless
you're really doing heavy duty video editing or working with massive files
constantly deleting them and creating new ones (temps, captures, renders, final renders, MPEG2 versions etc).
