Has Microsoft's marketing machine let it down ? Its less than 2 weeks before the launch of Vista and there is very little buzz ... compare it to the release of Windows 95 -- which as I recall -- had a far bigger general PR push ahead of its release

I think there was more of a buzz with Win95 as PC's were not common-place back then (in SA) and many people didn't even know what Windows was. Advertising "offline" was the only way to reach the general public. The Internet was nothing then like it is now. Now, Joe Soap is familiar with Windows, the internet and technology on the whole.

Most of M$'s advertising was (is) done online nowadays....Thats were the buzz you speak of is...

Just my R0.02

Short and sweet. :) But from what I have head I would have to agree. Around 800MB RAM usage, buggy, expensive...the list goes on...

as it is my XP uses bout 800MB ram (with sh!tloads of stuff running though :p), a clean install of vista only uses bout 370MB for me, anyways, it's kinda inevitable that newer stuff use more ram, look at games, most can barely run with 1GB nowadays. Anyways, doesn't mac os x also kinda suck with only 512MB?

Buggy? well XP is buggy as hell. Vista is built on Server 2003, and that was a huge improvement on XP, it can only get better.

Expensive? Retail versions of Windows have always been expensive, the OEM versions, that are sold with new computers (which will be the primary way Vista is gonna be distributed) cost, AFAIK the same as the equivalent XP versions.

I'm sticking with Windows XP 64-bit on the new PC I'm getting this month - I'm concerned about hardware and driver compatibility on Windows Vista. I'll wait another 6 months or so and then upgrade to Vista.

driver compatibility is even worse on XP 64-bit if i'm not mistaken

btw, XP 64-bit is actually just Server 2003 R2 with the server components striped, so it's actually sorta halfway between XP and Vista

Nah dude, I'm making a statement, that's all. I find that my shutdowns and restarts take a while longer, but that's just when Vista closes, my screen goes black for about 20 seconds and I wait.......

Boot up time is a breeze, it's as if the desktop and all the drivers and whistles loads while the progress bar moves, because if I log on to my account everything is there, wham bham! ;)

I've only put it on Wednesday, running Ultimate on a Amd64 3000+ 1Gb Ram, Geforce 6600. I managed to get Colin Mcrae 2005, which is a mess with starforce protection to work on Vista, so my big brothers can play with my Formula Force Gp and leave me alone, lol! :p

yeah, must admit, it's startup time is quite impressive, and I think that superfetch whatevertheycallit does quite a good job at caching programs that you use often

ye - vista suxors

windows xp is lighter and faster, but i will still move onto vista anyway. I want direct x 10 and i looove windows vista file explorer additions.

a bit too much gay eye candy, but suppose someone has to keep them it people who sit in cold server rooms happy. :)

Just loaded Vista RTM and busy checking it out.... have 30 days to decide if i wanna buy it before this version expires. Looks good so far - now to load all my extras and see what the drivers say - Vista RC1 had an issue with my TV card but an email to the vendors and they pointed me to their beta vista drivers. If that works then I will get it.

vista is a nice looking xp

vista is something you buy if you wanna play with new os

it offers nothing new

visual its nice

dx 10 will rock

will it change the way things get done

no

I think all versions of Windows suck... or is it just ME? ;)
