Hi,

I have a WD 1TB HDD (inside my TViX media player) that I've always connected via USB in order to copy etc from/to it. I haven't had an issue.

Yesterday I plugged it into my PC and recieved a message 'USB device unrecgnoised' or something to that effect. I tried plugging it out and in, and eventually I could see the drive. But then I got 'Windows Write Fail Error' and couldn't copy/paste/delete or anything. Rebooted and I always get that error.

I tried it in another machine and it worked first time and copied about 800GB of data across. However, I saw at about 600GB it gives the same 'Windows Write Delay Error'.

What exactly is this?

I've also had an external drive give this error, but on another PC the error went away.

Could be a sign of a dying drive.

Let's wait for the experts...

It's a brand new WD 1TB :(

Bought it after my Seagate 1TB died ... hope not a dying drive :/

I had a similar problem yesterday with a portable hard drive. I was using a USB extension cable. As soon as I removed the cable and used the normal one, it worked. It did not even want to recognise the device at one stage, so I had to format it (it was already empty anyway).

It's not a dying drive. It happens when a hard drive that is connected either Via Sata or USB is removed while it is still spinning. The data being written onto it becomes corrupted.

My suggestion is, if you don't want to format, to download and run combofix. Google it - it's a tiny application.

Then, next time, take better care when removing the HDD from the pc :D

Is this on Vista? If so, my brother had the same issue and I ended up having to delete the driver databse from windows and after I plugged the device back in it rebuilt the database. There is a specific way to do this and takes some time. Let me know and I can try find a link for you.

Xp :(

Didn't remove the drive at all ; in fact the 2nd time, I left it overnight and noticed the error the next morning after 600GB was actually transfer.

Tried another cable too ... same error
