Windows XP Embedded

Looks better? I've got the WinXP Embedded theme on my work laptop...

XPe is mos for applications where you don't want a hdd, but never seen one tho!

I have used it on point of sale terminals, just a scaled down version of Xp pro,
runs quicker doesnt have all the fancy features that are not needed.
But not alot cheaper than xp pro like R200.

Used them plenty in thin clients, there are a few characteristics:

It can boot from a USB/CD/Network location.
Must boot directly into an OEM application.
can be installed on anything, phone, thin client etc; but not a full PC.
It allows the OS to seamlessly redirect disk IO to another disk (required if the OS is booting from a RO flash disk).

Anybody used it before?

What is the main benefits of using XP Embedded above plain XP?

Yep, its comes standard on some thin client models.

- It requires very little disk space.
- Doesn't have all of the services as normal xp so it uses less resources.
- Most xp embedded thin clients comes with enhanced wright filter software, which basically protects the flash/HDD from being written to. So when enabled no changes are saved to the client- so you when you reboot you go back to the state that it was before. (useful for viruses and users that likes to brake things)

BTW the new versions is called Windows Embedded Standard: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsembedded/en-us/products/westandard/default.mspx

It can have all the services of regular XP, it's just easier to disable those that you don't need (useful for OEM builders)

Ah, nice to know.

Thanks :D

We have a lot of these in our canteens for our factory operators etc. They can do whatever they want and after a reboot it is gone.

Also we box them up and use them as information screens / terminals etc (Very dusty environment). Even though they are boxed (SO we can hose the entire area), they never overheat as they dont have fans / hard drives etc.
