I re-installed a fresh copy of XP on my laptop, know I cannot get the hibernation tab - I know it should be in control panel > power options

any1 that can help?

You need the Laptop Specific power handling stuff - normally also includes device drivers that must be installed for that specific motherboard.

Hunt for your motherboard on the interent and see if you can find out what motherboard sepcific stuff must be installed ...

I use it on start > turn off computer > hold shift down over stand by. This will give the hibernate option.

Does on my laptop. XP Home edition.

well make sure you have that "acpi" or whatever thingy it is enabled in your bios!

and check that its installed properly in your device manager!

Make sure you have SP2 installed, all Power Management options enabled in both bios and control panel - and this one always gets me:

Ensure that there is enough free hard disk space available on your boot partition for the hyberfil.sys to be created... IE - If you have 4gb of ram, but only 3gb free space, it won't work.

I know the above scenario is not too common, but could still be a drive space issue.

Hope it helps!

Control Panel -> Power Options -> Hibernate -> Enable Hibernation -> OK

Then you are good to go;

Start Menu -> Shutdown -> Shift (hold down on keyboard) -> Hibernate.
