Hi

Can anyone help me please. I have a PC I must sort out for someone. The thing is after the PC boots up is says windows is shutting down. (just like it would say if you do a normal shutdown) It does it in safemode as well. Sometimes it takes a few minutes and other times it's not even on properly.

Thanks

Just to err on the side of caution first check the temperatures in the Bios under hardware monitor that it's not overheating, however what you describe sounds like it needs XP reinstalled or repaired. Possibly a be a virus causing it.

Have you scanned for viruses/spyware? Sometimes the virus will terminate the svchost process which causes the machine to shutdown. When you get the message, open a command prompt and type shutdown /a

+1 for virus check - temps will usually just freeze or crash your PC, whereas virii will knacker the systems files and cause strange behaviour...

Virus, from my side.

Easiest to do - remove the HDD, put in USB enclosure, and scan from another PC (if another Windows PC, make sure autorun is disabled).

An easy way to check if it's temperature settings, go into the CMOS setup, and check if there's a PC health option (or hardware monitoring) - this depends on the make and manufacturer of the BIOS/PC - once there, you can check if temperatures are within tolerances.

if it's a virus/trojan, then good luck with cleaning it out.

Reminds me of the Sasser worm which hit Win2k PC's a while ago... not fun.
