What should I pay for a "retail" Windows XP?

Well, if it's an OEM edition then it should be "married" to your hardware configuration when you activate it (usually your motherboard). So what this means is that if you replace the motherboard or another major component then you have to buy another copy of Windows XP. But you can probably get away with calling Microsoft and telling them that your motherboard died ;)

EDIT: Forgot to mention that you can carry the retail license (if you bought the retail version) between different PCs as long as it's not installed on two PCs at the same time.

You mean new or second hand?

You can't buy it new anymore. (unless it is old stock) but Microsoft stopped selling the Retail version in December.

You can still buy the DSP (OEM) version until the end of June. But remember the DSP version comes with no support from MS.

And even then did you mean the Retail "Upgrade" version or the "Full" version?

What support where you expecting from MS? Updates and service packs? All versions of Windows can download those. You want telephonic support?
Call out support? An MS approved psychotherapist to counsel you when you get PTSD after using Windoze? :)

You can buy OEM Windoze cheap on Ebay too.

I'm not expecting any support from them, I never use their support.

But the Retail version of Windows XP comes with "Support" Directly from Microsoft... usually telephonic, but there are other support channels as well.

I don't buy retail versions of Windows XP, all my copies are DSP.

But the OP asked where he could buy a retail copy so I answered him and made a note about the level of support he would get with a retail versions.

Perhaps I should have stated it in the negative and mentioned that with the DSP version he would only get OS support from the hardware manufacturer.

Would that be ok with you then?
