Ok so it's time to replace my windshield.
Have a 0.5cm chip but with ~2cm cracks.
Was told that it needs to be replaced.

PG comes in at R1800 and National Auto at R1200.
Is there anyone else I should look at?

It's a 2001 Corolla.
I'm still trying to get a part number from Toyota.
OEM is a laminated Shatterprufe with the Toyota stamp.

I assume PG and National Auto use Shatterprufe, but I'm wondering if there's a difference with the Toyota part?

On my car PG fitted a windscreen they bought from the agents.

I suspect the quickest would be to ask PG (or whoever) to quote on the genuine Toyota part too and you can compare them. They might need your VIN number to get the correct part.

I got the Toyota stamp when I fitted with PG glass. I didn't ask for anything. Insurance covered the whole thing.

If R1800 is the full price, then you're doing well. I paid close to a grand just on my excess. :)

Shatterprufe makes most of the glass for in-country assembled cars anyway. I doubt there is any quality difference between the Toyota windscreen and the non-Toyota-branded Shatteprufe windscreen. National Auto are manufacturers as well as installers and claim SABS approval. There are some nasty imports out there as well.

R1800 isn't bad, full price the last time I replaced a windscreen on my Golf 6 was just over R7000, I paid R250 flat excess

Yeah, I could have been paying more on my monthly premiums to keep the excess down too :)

My insurance friend says Shatterprufe first, then National Autoglass for quality. Both are SABS and insurer approved.

A) Windscreen excess is fixed with my insurance at R250
B) I have an excess waiver for theft/accident damage that costs R31/m, total monthly premium including the waiver is R680 for a Scirocco 2.0

I'm not trying to get into a pissing contest, but I chose my insurance for the lower monthly premiums, and happily accepted the higher excess on glass. It's a personal choice.

Not a pissing contest, just saying that I'm not exactly paying a lot and I don't have a choice on excess for glass

Wonder why the windshields are so much more expensive on newer cars.

Anyway, I'm happy if it's a Shatterprufe and is laminated.
Moved to JHB during the highway construction period and it took a beating but held up very well considering what was thrown at it.
Ironically the straw that broke the camel's back was on a residential road.

Rain sensors, light sensors, it forms part of the car's structure etc.

That's how it is on all cars.

Only newer cars, a lot of the older cars it was just fitted with rubbers, not glued in like newer cars and with airbags it plays a key part in the deployment and efficacy of the airbag

Shatterprufe is overpriced - have been fighting with them for years to lower their prices. Find an installer who fits FUYAO generic glass which is just as safe as Shatterprufe and has the same quality and safety tests behind it but costs substantially less. FUYAO also comes standard in Land Rovers and some Chevrolet products... FUYAO is the best generic\alternative glass available in SA

How do I know? We own a motorglass fitment business in EL and offer Shatterprufe, OEM and generic FUYAO glass :)
