Wine

+1 on the Grunberger Freudenlese
Woolies zesty white is also good.

reds, u cant got wrong with the Shiraz.

Stay off the semi-sweet. That stuff is bad for you.

+1000000 :D Vaalies...

Robertson's and Van Loveren have both got some nice reds in their collection.

Don't know the reds, but the whites are good value for money, especially for the second bottle onwards. :)

Yes, the Alto is one of the best.
Rubicon is over prices, same as the Kanonkop. You pay for the name.

Alto Rouge is always good, I've yet to taste a bad year.

Agree, Rubicon is overpriced. Drank a 1989 the other day (from a friend's collection) unfortunately it was off.

Most of the 'Fat Bastards' are fairly nice imo!

+1 especially the Sauvignon Blanc.

I last week "discovered" the Altydgedacht Barbera 2007 - R85 at the farm. Great red wine! Never knew of the Barbera varietal.

This thread is making my mouth water, definitely opening a chilled Chardonnay tonight with the missus... :)

Have you tried Hidden Valley yet? If not you should ;)

No, will have a look at that!

We had a 23 year old Cabernet Sauvignon the other day, was great.
Took a long time to breathe though before the true flavours came out.
Decanted the crap out of it!

I discovered a varietal the other day SAngiovese from Bloemenhof.
Great and interesting flavours in the red wine.
Lots of potential.

Why are you all recommending dry whites and reds?

I dont drink semi sweets at any time.
Not even bubbly.

+1 The Chianti Classico style is made with it. Found it to be very soft and easy-drinking. Will definitely look out for the Bloemenhof one.

I don't really drink white wine so I am looking for advice on some nice semi-sweet white wine in the price class of R30-R60 / bottle.

wine and semi-sweet should never be used together.

Also any recom. on red wines in the price class of R40 - R80 / bottle.

You won't go wrong with any of the Zonnebloem @ around R60, also look for the Kanonkop Kadette and Graham Beck Railroad Red.

If you push a bit to the R90 mark, you will find the Rupert & Rotchschild Classique which is an awesome wine.

Basically you won't go wrong with anything that's got a Veritas or Micheangelo gold or silver label.

Pays to live in the Helderberg with the nearest wine farm 10min away and bottle stores all over the place buying directly from the estates :)

wait. R&R Classique I'm pretty sure is around R90 or was that R190!

Kanonkop Kadette was selling for around R60 at the Sunninghill Checkers last yr, it's actually slightly more expensive in the bottle stores around here - if you can find it!

I like them all. I also like trying different ones :)

I don't mind blended. I can appreciate the dry as well as the sweet ones although I rarely drink sweet wine.

I prefer red and something a tad fruity.

4 Cousins make a nice Rose. Chicks dig it.
Bellingham Johannesburger is also a popular one.

Naks - R&R does not go below the R190 mark that I know of.
It is part of their marketing strategy....that is of course if you can get their wines as most is exported.

We did a road trip to Montegu a few months ago to stock up on *cough* Muskadel.
Stocked up on some Rooiberg plonk.

I must make a turn at the local Checkers to see what they have.
I normally pop into Tops or SPar for something quick. They have some bargains there sometime! :D

Yep, me too. Checkers actually stocks some pretty good stuff.

I also buy most of my wine from PicknPay because I pay with my Discovery CC and get 15% discount. Did I mention I also buy ciggies at the same time?

Ok, so just to make sure, I went to the local bottle store and got a bottle of R&R Classique. It costs R94.95

My favourite is Exelcior Merlot. It's around R50, so well worth it.
