WinXP Home legit

Check with AfTaStEr on the Prophecy Forums, I remember he had a few legit pieces i.e. Home, Professional and 64bit Professional.
 
You may want to check MS licensing on that, afaik DSP or OEM windows are licenced only to the PC it was originally sold with and not transferable. Infact Matrix should not sell you a DSP version at all without buying some hardware with it.

Your chances of getting a 2nd hand retail version are slim as that was pulled off the shelves long before DSP.

Sub R2k machine with Windows is almost impossible.
If you need a legitimate OS on that machine for the price, Linux is the only alternative.

They can sell it with a jumper connector, that counts for hardware.

You can -IF they haven't been installed -and activated. Alternatively you can call MS and say your mobo burned out and you needed to reinstall or something like that. The former is 100% in agreement with the license the latter is dubious. However, second hand does not always mean used. Some people get OEM versions with their PC and install a volume license or have a retail from a previous PC or install another language.

BTW MS is so pathetic that they won't let you re-use the same COA key on the same machine if you want to reinstall but in a different language.
 
MOBO replacement = buy new DSP license; unless you replaced it with exactly the same one - actually replacing the BIOS will also require a new license :)

It works with points, each component is worth a certain number of points (i.e. HDD = 1 CD = 0.5), and if you change more than a number of points; you require an new license e.g. (not sure of the exact number, will find the guide somewhere) 4 point limit, if you change a processor (2 points), and RAM (2 Points), then you need a new license....
 
Personally I feel that if you want to sell a machine sub R2K then install LINUX. Slap on Ubuntu or Fedora.

Not punting LINUX is better, its just how much is the hardware really worth? and is paying for a legit OS going to be more profitable?

(Would also go for the Vista Starter edition if it needs to be sold with Windows)
 
I'm actually surprised you haven't pushed Linux to get the price down ;)

Yeah its an unfair system and only a fool would be honest in this regard - do you tell a burglar the truth or do you lie? Same thing. You paid for something, something which is dominant because its masters made it dominant in various underhanded ways and you have to pay again and again, to run the same?

It's idiotic. I believe in the EU you can do whatever you want with an OEM copy of Windows (transfer to) because EULAS are not binding there.
