Hi

I want to setup a wireless connection between my house and a friends house but I'm not sure what equipment to get(2.4ghz). I live 3km from him, we do have line off sight, and I would also like to know what the loss would be on a 1mb adsl line when I would transmit it over 2.4ghz, please help.

I stand under correction but I don't think you are allowed to do that.

You could try see if you can join a WUG in your area. www.wug.za.net

EDIT: I see WUGs also run on 2.4Ghz or 5.8Ghz.

According to my father 2.4ghz is free, unfortunately I live in Upington, no wug's here

Ah ok cool. Well then I'm sure you could even use the WUG kits and make your our 'WUG'. That's all they are really.

Here's an extreme simplification:

You have: LOS, 20 dBm transmit power, isotropic antenna, receiver sensitivity at -110 dBm.

(the extreme simplification part) assuming free space path loss, you'll get ~110 dB loss to cover 3 km at 2.4 GHz.

You will therefore receive at -90 dBm. Problem is that FSPL is an IDEAL situation never seen in practice so your receiver will be hard stuck trying to pick out every symbol from the noise floor.

Simplest way to prove to you that you need to narrow down your efforts to a proper equipment search. Easiest start would be a proper directional on both sides which would usually net you a 2 x 15 dB increase (depends on the antenna gain).

I see there is a RouterOS Level 3 License, what is this, and @ 1mb what will the speed be at me.

Will you recommend a cpe with an external antenna or this integrated cpe?
