I am trying to set-up my access point for local wireless use.
I have a Senao SL2611CB3+
http://www.miro.co.za/detail.aspx?pid=164&p=Wireless&sp=Indoor Wi-Fi&spp=Access Points
(retired from service as long range bridge)

The device is configured in access point mode and connected to my home network.
From the wired side, I can ping the AP and also access the configuration from my browser.

From the wireless side my laptop "sees" the SSID, successfully connects to the AP and is assigned an IP by the upstream router/DHCP server on the wired side.

However no communications is possible to or from the laptop over the the wireless connection.
Ping from the laptop to its own DHCP assigned IP works.
Ping from the laptop to the AP or any host on the wired side (all one subnet in the 192.168 range) fails.
Ping from the wired side to the laptop also fails.

Any help appreciated.
Thanks.

No, client isolation is disabled.

WEP disabled.

MAC filtering disabled.

All Wireless parameters set to default settings.

Any other ideas?

whats are the ip's of the laptop and AP?

I use the 192.168.21.0/24 subnet for my home network.

Router/DHCP server: 192.168.21.123
AP: 192.168.21.124
Laptop: 192.168.21.5

I have also tried the AP on the office network (which uses a public IP range) with the exact same results.
Thus it does not look like a network problem.
Rather a setup problem on the AP or laptop.

Help much appreciated.

For what it is worth, here is the wireless parameters set on the AP (all defaults):

Channel: 6
Basic rates (Mbit/s): 1, 2, 5.5, 11 (Rates for management packets)
Supported rates (Mbit/s): 1, 2, 5.5, 11 (Rate for data packets)
Transmission rate (Mbits/s): Auto
Preamble type: Long
Maximum associated stations: 200
Fragmentation threshold: 2346
RTS threshold: 2432
Beacon period: 100 (milliseconds)
DTIM interval: 1 (number of beacons per DTIM)
Multicast PM buffering: enabled

Laptop is running WinXP Pro (patched up to date)

well thats really odd. all the ip info seems correct. really strange that the notebook is receiving an ip from the dhcp server but can't ping it. is the subnet mask on the notebook 255.255.255.0?

Yes.

Laptop receives all the correct info via DHCP (gateway, DNS etc).

I am also starting to think that it might be a problem on the laptop. Will try to find another laptop / wireless device to test with.

No encryption? If there is. Change the password on the ap to something else

OK, got another notebook to test with.
Works fine.

So the problem is with the notebook!!
Brand new Dell Inspiron 9400 with Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG wireless.

Will download latest wireless driver and reinstall...
Hope this will sort it out. Thanks for the help so far.

A year later and the problem still persists...

Problem seems to be a compatibility issue between the Senao SL2611CB3+ access point and the Intel ProWireless adapter.

Have now tried 4 notebooks with Intel ProWireless and all give the exact same problem.
If I use a PCMCIA wireless adapter (tried 2, both not Intel) in the same notebook, there is no problem and all works fine.

I've got the ""Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG wireless."" on my laptop. Never had any issues with it to speak of. Had it connected to at least 6 different makes of routers and AP's, yada yada.

Maybe flash, your routers firmware? - They might've fixed problems etc...

Router was flashed with the latest firmware when I initially encountered the problem. No newer firmware released since and because it is an old device I doubt if new firmware will be released.

I am certain it is a problem with the access point rather than with the Intel Pro Wireless. For now I can work around it using alternative adapters. Just a bit of a pain that visitors often cannot use their built-in wireless adapters.

The Senao SL2611CB3+ only supports 11b. 11g is not supported.
I have tried forcing the notebook adapter to use b, but it did not help.
