First- I'm clueless when it comes to networking/hardware.

Current set up-
Have an ethernet cable running through the roof from modem (Billio 7401 VGP)to bedroom.
Need wifi in the room so need something to connect the ethernet cable in bedroom that can transmit a wifi signal.

I've seen wireless APs and read somewhere that you can use a 2nd router/modem as a wireless AP.

If so, what would the advantage of a wireless AP be over another modem since the prices are the same?
If I go the 2nd modem route can the other ethernet ports on the 2nd modem be used to connect to my laptop with an ethernet cable or can you only use wireless?
Appreciate the help.

The cheapest way - move ADSL modem to your bedroom, so you can use WiFi or cable connection for any device you have from the same modem. Yes, both cable and WiFi can be used at the same time. If it is not possible for some reason, you need extra WiFi access point at the end of Ethernet cable (i.e in your bedroom). Usually it has integrated Ethernet switch for connecting extra devices by cable.

If cost is a limiting factor, you can enable Internet connection sharing on your laptop, using wireless device on your laptop as an access point.

I you mean getting another 7401VGP working as wireless access point in your bedroom, possible but not a good idea, as it is very slow on WiFi, you should get at least 802.11b/g/n access point.
