Hi,

Me and a friend are trying to share and internet connection over WiFi. He lives about 1.5km from me. Terain is a bit hilly(Brackenfell - Protea Heights).

I can connect to him, but the connection is very sporadic(?).

Currently I'm using a 14dbi patch antenna and a Planet 4000 WAP.

Any suggestions as to other antennae that might be better suited for our purposes?

do you some LOS? use a more directional antenna like a panel or grid. but if there is no LOS then dont kill the 2.4 Spectrum by putting 24 db grids on either side. rather get a middle node and bounce the signal.
create a small WUG in that area. join http://www.ctwug.za.net

you should only need a 12 db yagi for that link

LOS is a bit of a problem. If I can get someone in the vicinity of the Spar in Protea Village we might be able to "bounce", but I'm quite new to the area, so I don't really know anybody at the moment.

I've been trying CTWUG's site, but I can't seem to access it. See http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=60423

My friend uses a Planet wap414 and omni atenna.

His antenna may be the problem. Omni's are not that great for long distance. Try a patch on his too.

A couple of his next-door neighbours also tie in to him. Would a patch still work in that instance?

get rid of the omni and it will work better

depends on the angle between you and his neigbour

I've got a connection over 0.93km, running from an 8dBi Omni on my side, with a 15dBi panel on the receiving side, the panel is in a bit of a ditch, and if I force the connection to 2Mbit's, it's stable.

I have the same 180° problem, so besides forking out for a sector, I'm stuck with the connection as is.

Have you tried forceably dropping the speed? If it's simply for internet connection sharing, only a Telkom 4Mbit ADSL will degraded by a 2Mbit LAN connection.

I have used a patch successfully from the wrong side over a shortish distance - try that first and see if the neighbour can still connect.
