I have Ubuntu 9.10 on my destop and I'm planning to buy a wireless dongle so that I don't have to take my Desktop to the lounge where the router is everytime I have to update or install something. I know that quite a number of hardware are not compatible or are difficult to use on Linux. I just want to know if there's anyone here who uses a wireless dongle to connect to the router.
I have the Telkom Billion 400G as my router and will change it when the need comes, which means I want a dongle that should work with a number of routers.
I also want a dongle that's not so expensive, but it should not stop working after a few months. Any suggestions as to where I can get a very cheap working dongle?

I just hope it's not a hassle to make it work on Linux coz I'm still a noob:eek:

Why not just get a cheap PCI wireless card? Most chipsets are supported by Karmic, you only have to take this into account if you plan to do packet sniffing on nearby wireless networks and you need to set the radio to monitor. Not that I am in any way suggesting you do this... with Backtrack ... ;)

I have a netgear USB wi-fi dongle and it has worked with all my versions of Ubuntu since 8.10.

:)

Hope you find what you looking for.

P.S the wi-fi support on Lucid Lynx 10.04 is fantastic :)

Why a usb dongle? It's harder to identify the chipses they use. The chipsets might even differ between different revisions.

Hopefully someone here can point you in the right direction, alternatively look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/WirelessCardsSupported

The thing is that I have a Dell desktop computer, the one you put on top of the desk and put your monitor on top of it - not the tower one. So I'm not really sure if I can put a wireless card in there. But I will explore both options and choose the cheapest. I also prefer the dongle so that I can use it on another computer if I upgrade or get a second pc.
