Wireless dreams

WIMAX IS WIDELY TOUTED as the next big thing in broadband. Protagonists of the wireless technology are fighting a tooth and nail battle worldwide with the next evolution of GSM cellular technologies to win the hearts and minds of telecommunications providers.

only once ICASA has given out the ECS and ECNS licenses will anyone be able to provide a WiMax solution. Now with Altech stalling the process with their Court action, who knows when that will be...some say 18 months...

@Rabbit7766

Sentech is a joke. I don't think they know how to tie their shoes, nevermind deploy wireless networks.

Oh ja... agreed fully. But the fact still remains they have spectrum, which someone else could be using...

In areas where ADSL is still the dominant option I cannot see Wimax getting much uptake. In Rural areas... yes... but where fixed cable is available it will rule.

Garyvdh, in rural areas wifi (802.11a) is much more cost effective. WiMax is expensive to deploy. There are hundreds of WISPs around the country. They are providing a solution today.. yet, none of them use WiMax.

DSL will be king until the point where wimax will offer us far better speeds at lower prices.

WiMAX vs HSDPA

DSL will be king until the point where wimax will offer us far better speeds at lower prices.

Agree but can WiFi do THIS ? In fact can HSDPA do it ?

----------------
Part of WiMax's attraction is that its technology can be used for voice or data services. Van der Westhuizen says its 100 trialists in Soweto were given equipment to make calls across the link and the technology worked marvellously. That praise from a service provider is vitally important, as it will allow users to discard their fixed telephone lines and run both their home phones and Internet connections across the same link.
=============

I use ADSL plus WiFi (LAN) plus HSDPA.

IF WiMAX was available I would use it IF the price was right. In fact I might use it in preference to HSDPA ???? Especially if their interface device supported BLUETOOTH and I could hook up voice with one of those little ear goodies.

I am not sure WHY all the wireless guys are scared of Data & Voice just like DSL ?????
