Wireless in eThekwini

would love to know how to get onto this - and if we can choose which provider to get our cap from. as I'm on openweb uncapped, i woulnt let go until i find something better / cheaper, but will gladly let go of telkom if i could keep openweb on the new bandwidth carrier.

R150 nice :) tho no mention of caps?

Good lord....why are we ALWAYS so hung up on cap!!!!!!?????!?!?!?!?!?!?!

JEEPERS man!!!! Look at what this is going to do to open up the market!! Even if initially only bring down the rental costs of telephone and broadband. The whole cap issue will play out in time.

I'm all for lower/no cap costs but the more I visit this site the more I see people just whine. Let's start praising the little changes that are occuring. At least the government can't "manage" the municipalities telecoms as heavily as it does Telkom and probably Neotel, so there's a little hope there!!

Reason is this: So far in my short existence i know one truth of SA telecoms.. there is always fine print when prices look good. I don't trust the local gov venture into telecoms.

What good is Internet connectivity if you can't use it?

If they have a 500MB cap then it won't be enough for even basic browsing and e-mail.
The cap does matter otherwise all they are doing is offering a local voice call service for R150 per month and if that's the case one may as well just get a Telkom POTS line.

There we go assuming things again....Just wait till they actually release the package specs. And then if you run out of cap buy some more...simple as that.

Sounds like ADSL ...

“...can get internet access and make domestic calls for about R150 a month,” says Subban. “That is our benchmark.”

Sorry what does "make domestic calls" mean? Does that mean they are unlimited free domestic calls for R150 a month or does it mean the "line rental" is R150.00 a month and then u still pay for any calls you make?

Very ambiguous statement! I suppose either way R150.00 for data and voice line rental is not bad.

Lets wait and see! Looks positive IMO, but my problem is im an avid gamer and dont expect any decent ping from this, especially if we're all sharing the same line. But lets see what happens

Issue about cap chavez? People LOVE to download, thats why they want to know.

Sounds like you've never heard of YOUTUBE ;)

Basically, the idea is that any call within the municipalities infrastructure will be free. IE: If you and your mom are both hooked up, you can call her for free. I went to a presentation on this some time ago its part of their "Smart City" project. The BPL trials are already up and running, albeit in a very specific area (AKA One sub station.... the one the project leader is connected to, go figure) and they have awarded the tender for the wireless installation as far as i know. Looks like their time lines have been pressed back somewhat as i recall they were looking at providing some services from 1st quarter 2007...

you clearly are brainwashed with the whole capping thing - its not internet if you're limited to 3gigs or 10gigs or 20gigs... - one of the reasons i'm on a uncapped account. It won't be worth switching if it doesnt support my uncapped account or offer uncapped at a better price

so yes, its all about the cap, the price, the speed. Welcome to the forum!.

While customers in Tshwane are browsing and downloading to their hearts’ content, but who they are, I'm also living in Tshwane or is it Pretoria ?
But I don't know anybody using it, maybe there was a demo sometimes back, but still a lot of talk, so when and where can I apply ?

Gosh! This is brilliant news! We are public at last!!! I have to wonder which substation they are admitting to heheh.... As Ive said from the outset the trials have been right here in Sherwood and ongoing since 2004 despite any outraged denials. Yea tho I walk through the valley of the Linksys heheh.... smart bridges may trip me, antenna may blind me.... but here it is guys....
And the Troll of Fire may get behind me and forget the Damage Control agenda he attempts *choking......

toady:D :D
