The mede8er comes with two options for streaming: wireless N and wired GbE. I currently have 2 mede8er 500x2 unit with the WiFi enabled and have not had issues to date.

Depending on where your WiFi access point is located and how strong the signal is between the AP and the mede8er, you should have no problems.

The mede8er 10003D is pretty new so I would hold of on purchasing it just yet - rather check out the mede8er forums to see what issues have been encountered.

get something that can install XBMC...... anything else is just a waste of time.

Anything in mind keeper?
Its not for me. Its for someone who is not very computer literate.
Id build a little media server if it were for me but ya, thats not gonna happen.

The range is probably around 15m where it would need to go from - to.

Just get yourself a HP Proliant Microserver and install a wireless adapter.

Yes, that's exactly what I did.

"not very computer literate" tells me you should not go my route though... Mede8er or ACRyan (very cheap) is probably the best way to go.

Are there walls between though? that could be a problem (in my mind) for wireless, but I would not know for certain as I use CAT5e cable @ 1Gbps.
I'd be most worried about this than what brand of media player.

Nope, no walls. Open plan house from the Kitchen entrance ( two steps up ) to the lounge.
Everything in the house is Harmon Kardon and Boston. I think even the speakers in the roof are :/
But if I can get something that plugs into the amp downstairs it would be awesome for them. Currently its copy from USB to PC all the time. Id like to simplify the entire process without the need for wires.

You could increase signal strength and throughput by installing a Wireless N AP like a Netgear 802T and then the media player will be quite content.

I have the above mentioned setup between two floors and it works flawlessly.

If I know them there is no budget haha.
But I dont want to get them something thats insanely expensive.

Hmmm have you checked the product specs page for this router? It does not have a check mark in the HD Video streaming box. Are the users planning on watching HD content?

Where is the router currently located in the house?

I did see that yes. Ive tried to do it with my netgear and as long as im not using the net or anything it handles it perfectly.
I very much doubt it will be used for HD content. Music and Series will pretty much be it.
If HD content would be used id suggest they copy it over to the HD first :)

Do they like Apple products?

If they do AppleTV might be a good option here?
(plus the fact that it can install XBMC, if you later on choose to do so)

PS: I'm just giving a suggestion though, I don't own an AppleTV.

They love their Ipads haha. Everyone in the house has one.
Perhaps its something to look at.

Off to google I go...

Edit :I think the Mede8er would be better suited.

I would still recommend the mede8er, it plays almost an media format and by the sounds of things will suffice on WiFi for their use as long as the kids / dogs and cats are not on the network simultaneously :p
