I used my PC the other day at a friends house and I connected to his WiFi no problemo!! First time, all did was punched in the password and vioula!

what security protocol are you running on your wi-fi network and have you first tried the wi-fi network without security or an alternative security protocol.

that resolved my problem.

EDIT

I am running a secured wi-fi network but not the common one which was WEP. WEP gave me that problem you are discussing. Why it was is beyond me.

your router is not handing the pc an ip address (via dhcp), thus, your wireless network adapter has used the autoconfigured address (the one starting 169.254 etc..). as there is no default gateway, it has no way of knowing "how" to go online.

that is your problem. either manually assign an ip to it, gateway and dns, or go sort out your router so it hands out ip addresses

last point: if you swear it has connected, fine, but if for some reason it actually didnt see anything properly, it will also use the autoconfigured address.

p.s. it probably worked at your friends house because it received an ip address from his router. the problem probably isnt with your machine.
or with vista.

dont worry ole chap,Soon you will go grey an loose your hair, with this F#$^kin vista.I have been busy 3 days for an adhoc connection,I boot into xp and all works,so what i did was take all settings and ip's from all adapters and exported to vista, well let me tel youIT DID NOT WORK.
wELKOM to the heartbreak club.

I would say everything Renamed said.

You'll probably also want the subnet to be 255.255.255.0 if you assign the IP manually.

I got the local only when I connect to the router wirelessl-y. Then have to manually set a connection to the internet. Its weird. But it works

How would I do that? I have a Telkom 5102g Router?

Ok, another quick question. I have done the same on another PC running Windows XP SP2 and I get get it connected to network but I cant browse the internet... Any suggestions??

Yes, yes..

So this morning the wireless on my Vista machine has gone back to 'Local only'. Yesterday was working fine... FFS!!

this is gonna sound dumb, but from what you are saying and what i am hearing, you gave the same ip address to the vista and the xp machine.

that is why the vista machine is now "dead"

Maybe because wep is hex only and has 0's not O's as most people try put in :P
