Hi guys, first off im going to say with regards to wireless that I am absolutely clueless, so flame away, secondly my linksys router is picking up the following (I took screenshots but dont know how to post them).

Ssid - Guestlink , Mac - 00:01:E3:5D:FF:2E, Channel 6, Rssi -87, Noise -95, Beacon 100, Cap 1057, dtim 0, rates 12(g).

Thats is the result from when i go wireless > survey. How do I connect to that, can I convert a MAC address to an ip?

Then under DHCP active IP table, I found the following:

Client Host Name: Diabolique (not me), 192.168.1.101 (my router is 192.168.1.1), Mac 00:16:CE:4C:C3:28, Expires 21:08:09.

How do I connect to any of those users? Are they the same user, im assuming the Guestlink is a router and Diabolique as well, any help appreciated I am totally clueless when it comes to wireless.

I pinged and tracert that ip and got 100% packet lose and no trace.

Thanks

J

Diabolique is somebody who has connected to YOUR router, best u start enabling security!

The DHCP active IP table is a table of users that have received an IP from your router as they connected to it.

Guestlink will be another router, u would have to setup your router in "client mode" to be able to connect to it, using standard wrt54g software i dont think its possible. If you had a wireless card in your pc you could connect to
Guestlink if your signal can reach it

Hmmmm.

Well thats pretty easy to block them right, I can just limit the mac address from that device, as for standard software for the router, my firmware is hacked, dont know if this would help its alchemist v something, not at router at the moment, and wth is the point of having a damn wifi router if you need a wireless card on top of that to connect to other computers within your range, also I forgot to mention as soon as I saw that on the DHCP list i deleted it, so once deleted the entry is barred from that mac address right, or do i need to go set that mac address to deny, basically what im asking is once i delete it from the list is it banned or do i have to enters its mac to ban it? - J

Mac address filtering will not work, it is fairly trivial for that user that connected to sniff a valid MAC and spoof his MAC address.

If your router supports WPA, set that up.

if you are running alchemy then u can use your router in client mode.

ok lets straighten some stuff up.

You router at default is an ACCESS POINT, wireless clients connect to IT.
IT doesnt not connect to other things!

Diabl*** is connecting it, you are connecting to it. Its giving out dhcp ip's to you guys.

Deleteing that dhcp thingy does not ban Dia** , all it does is say that the ip that was assigned to him may now be assigned again to someone else , or him if he comes back.

You need to go into the wireless security and setup WPA at best, or at lease WEP.

Now, go into you wireless settings and choose "CLIENT" mode then your router stops acting as a ACCESS POINT, you cannot connect to it wirelessly anymore, now the router itself is acting just like the wifi card in your pc, its trying to connect to an access point, what you need to set is the ssid of the OTHER ACCESS POINT that it is sposed to be accessing, as for the ip's they may be static, dhcp, pppoe... who knows... unless you know anything about that other access point you will just be guessing. You router technically has a WLAN card in it and a normal router attached to that, therefore your WLAN card portion of it can have some funny dhcp assigned ip from the Guestlink AP, yet localy you are on a 192.168.1.* network that the lan section of your router has assigned and is operating on. It should automatically try bridge traffic.

The reason u would user your router in client mode like this is so that you would probably join your network to another network.

Thanks :)

I'll copy what you said and ummm see what i can do with it , as i said im a wireless newb, if I have no luck ill try and post a screenshot of my router page.

Heh maybe I can hopefully leech someone's wireless if his passwords are on default or guest is open, or on the otherhand maybe i could have a p2p network.

Thanks for the help, more would be appreciated if anyone has tips

his network has Rssi -87, Noise -95

which is a pretty bad signal, i doubt you will be able to connect to him

Probably True

But..... I have no external antenna at the moment, so I assume as soon as I plug one in i'd be ok. - J

well this is how you have to think of it.

his router is now shouting out stuff, obviously yours is hearing it even though very faint.

yours needs to shout back, and he needs to hear you. using a yagi antenna is the best option here, its like using a loudhailer, its directional and if you point it the right way he should hear u

you both have to be shouting loud enough for each other to hear each other

Prices?

Where can i get such an antenna, what distances would it give, and what would the cost be?

If you could answer those questions i'd be really grateful, also add in anything else i should know, thanks for allowing me to waste your time - J

Details?

Websites, contact numbers, do suppliers like sahara/rectron offer these?

Which makes are better, which antenna's are better, seriously guys im frikkin clueless, help a brother out - J

So...

So like I managed to set my router to client mode, i am running Firmware Version: Alchemy-6.0-RC5a v3.01.3.8sv. Yet how do i force it to bridge traffic and connect to those connecting to me, where is the option to connect to a specific ssid? i cant find it. Closest thing i could find was advanced routing for RIP and OSPF , once is dynamic and one is static right?
I tried both these modes, yet i cant find their ip or manage to use ssid to connect, help please.

- J

K

Im presuming thats a firmware upgrade, can i connect to ssid's of pc's in my area whilst running client mode on my router with this firmware? - J

So many link on that website, what is the link for the specific download, i dont know what file to download for my linksys wrt54g to flash the firmware - J
