Wireless Security Survey

How many PCs are allowed on your network through MAC address filtering? We have MAC address filtering set up to only allow the 5 PCs spesified by us on our network.

Allow 1 PC. I monitor IPs on the network once a day with netdiscover. Pokes to find the arp address of nics, I sometimes run smbclient to see the names of the PCs. Luckily my switch bums out when two pcs have the same MAC. I didn't run MAC filtering for a day or so and someone connected and downloaded 15G from my PC, luckily not the Internet. I uploaded a few things to his PC, a connection works both ways. ;)

I can relate :D

Well it seems that out of the 10 people who posted their security specs, 70% of you use WPA-PSK, while 20% use WEP 128-bit or above and 10% use no form of encryption at all.

Thanks for your input, guys! :)

Do you have any idea how many people run unprotected AP's out there? I have found many.

There is no real reason not to encrypt your wireless network, considering how easy it is to setup! But yeah, I've seen a fair few, unfortunately.

Do you use WEP because you choose to or because your router doesn't support WPA?
Basically because I chose to at the moment. My AP support WPA but I am also connecting to another AP that does not support it. Anyway, if someone gets in, there will not be a lot that they have access to since that is all protected.

Well, Windows XP has seperate settings for every access point, so you can connect to one with WPA and then to one with WEP on-the-fly.

How are they protected? Windows Encryption?

Primarily I choose not to run Windows. I run SuSE together with it's built in firewall software on my server. My Gaming PC (which is dualboot) is off when I am not at home. I'm using the Nvidia chipset with built in firewall on that machine.

Actually the one AP connects to the other over wireless. I needed to connect a camera that does not have wireless built in and didn't have the time or energy to put cabling in....

Doesn't hiding the SSID make for a bit of inconvenience when setting up a new computer to join your wireless network?

It's just manual. All my mates that use my network have it setup already. At least if some somes close to your house with a wireless device they don't get the wireless network in range thing so they don't really know there is one near.
