Hi,

I have a usb/ethernet adsl router.

I can use a usb cable to connect the router to my laptop and get Internet connectivity (instead of using the NIC)

Is there such thing as a wireless usb adapter to replace the cable?

IIRC you can get wireless USB hubs but it'd be cheaper to get a new wireless ADSL router.

I would suggest investing in a wifi router and then use your laptops built in wifi (if it has) and just connect to the router. That's what I do, my whole LAN is visible to me and I can execute programs on the other pc's with remote desktop if I'm too lazy to stand up :p

It's going to be much cooler than creating ICS and connecting with a wifi dongle :p

I dont want to think of throwing away my nice router (which cost R500 back in the day)
So would rather get a R200 wireless usb adapter, if I can find one.

Tell me.

How would you connect to the internet then?

You will need to have a pc, connected to the router, to be on 24/7 when you want to connect with the laptop.

Then you have to set up ICS (internet connection sharing) on a PPPoE dialup account on the pc, which you connect to from the laptop.

That sounds silly to me and unfortunately there's no way around it.

Get a wifi router ;)

Like I said you can get wireless USB hubs but the ones I saw were R1000+, not exactly worth it.

Get a wifi router ;)

My ADSL router has 4 ethernet points and 1 USB (with a driver)

So would plug 1 usb end into the router and the other into the laptop... and instead of it being cable based.. rather wireless.

Or if that option is expensive.. then I would need to get a whole new router.. but I am cheap :p

Wow, dude, if that trick works then I'd be very happy for you. Actually, give it a shot and tell me if it works.

I would think the USB interface on the router is to connect the router via cable to the pc? If it's smart enough to "interface" with a Wifi dongle, then that's some smart technology.

What do you think Syndyre, could it work? :p

Currently I can use a normal usb cable plugged from the router to the laptop and it works 100's.
Catch is I want it to be wireless.. and Im too cheap to buy a wireless router if I could rather just get a wireless usb connection (if such thing).

Definitely not with plugging in a Wifi dongle unfortunately. ;) What I was talking about are USB hubs where you plug your USB devices into a hub and then a dongle into your computer and the 2 interface wirelessly, but not over Wifi. I guess you'd use them for external hard drives, printers etc. The couple I've seen online though have been more expensive than new routers so it wouldn't really be the way to go. :)

You could always get a cheapo wifi access point that you could use with your existing ADSL modem, I'm not sure how much you'd save though.

Thanks for the advise :)

Be nice if there was such thing as a wireless ethernet cable :p
Plug 1 end into the router, the other into the NIC :p

Probably will have to go the wireless router route

I thought so ;)

Sorry Student bro, but I won't suggest wasting money to get those dongles if it isn't going to work. As Syndyre says and as I assume too, the router isn't "smart" enough to know a USB wifi dongle was plugged in, nothing will happen most likely.

Syndyre made a great suggestion. Rather look for a wifi access point, which plugs in via Ethernet cable to the router and allows you to connect wirelessly ;)

Check Take 2, Kalahari and Digitalsaonline.

Never meant a wifi dongle, more a replacement for a plain usb cable which is wireless....
But you get a wireless ethernet cable?
