I'm was planning to get a Telkom Home DSL 192 connection. How would that compare to a wireless connection?

Also, has anyone tried iconnectsa.co.za? Their prices seem very reasonable. Is there a catch? I've had some experience with ADSL but am clueless when it comes to wireless.

Thanks for any advice,
Michael

Most of the wireless ISP's are also clueless when it comes to wireless ! :)

If everything was alright in "wireless land" I'd heartily suggest you go with iBurst, however it's not alright at present - who knows when WBS will come to their senses.

I can see you've just arrived here and I will say that for many, they are happy with iBurst - but have a look here first :-

If your not a heavy internet user I'd say go with Vodacom3G right now - depending on the reception in your area.

ADSL is the most reliable, but getting a line installed can be an exercise in sheer frustration. The chances of being able to get it are 50/50, it then takes at least 3 weeks to install.

Give Telkom a call and find out if ADSL is in your area - and then phone again and double check. Many people have initiated an ADSL install, only to find out 3 weeks later that ADSL isn't available to them because the exchange has no spare connections - and get told to wait for up to 6 months !

Then get hold of Vodacom and find out if their 3G solution could work for you - There's a Vodacom user on this forum - Vodacom3g - http://www.mybroadband.co.za/vb/member.php?find=lastposter&t=19484

Very helpful person !

Hi bb_matt,

Thanks for the quick response. I'll into 3G.

On the http://www.iconnectsa.co.za website it says unlimited downloads without capping.

Is this not true then? Do you think is you download to much they will cut you off anyway?

Regards
Michael

No problem Mike - just one thing, the broadband arena is really up in the air at the moment, so be careful signing any lengthy contracts - the current consensus is to go with a month by month service.

Thanks for the advice. I didn't want to sign a contact anyway in case I'd rather switch to a different service.

After looking at 3G it isn't an option due to the 1Gb bandwidth limit. 3Gb would be enough for me, but obviously higher is better.

http://www.iconnectsa.co.za sounds great as it says you get no caps, shared 256kbps connection, minimum speed of 128Kbps, for R450. I'm really worried there's a catch somewhere though.

Looks like a good deal. A company bio and a physical address would be nice though. And, of course, some actual coverage maps, rather than a promised rollout. It also doesn't mention whether there is a contract involed.

I assume you mean the cost limit. There is no 'bandwidth' limit on 3G. If you can pay for it, you can use it. 3GB on 3G will cost you an outragious R1800 , but it is there.

But yes, 3G at this stage is only viable for low bandwidth usage. If you pay more than R600 p/month on 3G then i'd look into something else. In other words if you use more than 1GB p/month i wouldn't go for 3G unless mobility is the primary reason for needing it [For example, i can't order ADSL because i won't be living in the same location next year].

Hi all!
Been reading this forum for some time ...........excellent source of information.

now for my question......

Is anybody actually using Iconnect?

Offer sound to good to be true :D

Any further comments and information would be appreciated

there is a big difference between "shared connection" and "contended connection"

shared is effectively 256k/20 user = 12.8k per user (if assumed 20 users on 1 256k line) which would make your download speed (if everyone downloaded) around 1.6kb/s (which is around a 14.4k modem)

if it is contended, it's a whole different story and you might be able to get very close to 256k speeds (32kb/s)

Personally, I'd go for the ADSL 192 option. Ping times are low, and you can skip the 3 gig cap by buying from UUNET (uncapped) or from a company like ayce who will give you a 30gig cap. The reliability is also through the roof, and unless some asswipe goes and steals your copper line, you'd know that you'll be online. Unlike wireless providers, where if you fart your connection goes down

I don't seem to have had much flatulence since I got Iburst.

Mike, get a iburst reseller to give you a demo and test the signal in your area. There are some disgruntled Iburst users, but contrary to popular opinion in these forums, there also are very many happy users.

Do you really want 192k in weeks/months when you can get 1024k in 24 hours?

I side with noone on this (yes very punny :D ), ADSL is more reliable with better latency and 1mb/s is useless with only a 3 gig cap. Even on 192k you'll hit your cap in less than 2 days if downloading constantly so what help is 1mb/s?

btw, Telkom is releasing 1mb ADSL in June. So what OTHER excuse do you have now?

Mike, I suggest you try iBurst. You can get it within hours. test it for 7 days and you decide. I'm happy with the service and I'm in a good coverage area.

I can confirm it by telling you to read a bit of news on the front page of this website once and a while. also check out other parts of the forum (not the mywi one)

I wont suggest iburst at all. I'll suggest ADSL 192, which you can UPGRADE FOR FREE if you like the service, plus, you can game successfully and download locally WITHOUT A CAP. Iburst caps you no matter what you download. Plus, there are easy ways around p2p shaping with ADSL and ADSL won't suspend your account if you download too much. Unlike iburst

Can you confirm details regarding Telkom ADSL 1MB release for June? Please!

Here is a link what ITWeb's daily IT news mailed me.
http://www.itweb.co.za/sections/telecoms/2005/0504061200.asp?S=Internet&A=INT&O=FRGN

Can't for the life of me think it's going to be cheap considering it's Telkom.

Due to my "love" for Telkom I will not use DSL until they bring the prices down and I would rather spend money on a wireless provider even though they might be dodgy in some cases.

This www.iconnectsa.co.za doesn't look to bad at all, but one must make sure about the "shared connection" issue and what areas they cover.

Iconnect @R450 P/m

I sent an email to Iconect.co.za
and here is the reply i got:

"Thank you for your enquiry.

We are, however only offering coverage in the Northern Province at the
moment.

We will keep your details, and as soon as we are able to offer a service in
your area we will contact you.

Regards,

Jackie
