I have a friend that lives about 800 metres from my house and we would like to hook ourselves up wirelessly.

At present I have a WRT54GL router. Can I hook up an antenna on it, and if I can, can anybody recommend one? Another problem that I see is that there is no line of site. I can't see his house from mine. (It looks like there is trees blocking LOS)

My friend on the other hand will also probably need an antenna?

Any advice would be highly appreciated. I'm kind of nervious on buying styff and at the end of the day it might not work.

I was too ;)

perhaps one of these on your friends side, and you get any panel/sector antenna and you're sorted. I currently have a 1km link where the client side is down quite a large dip with houses on the rise - let's just say no LOS.

I think LOS makes your connection far more stable and provides higher speeds, but forcing the connection to lower speed, will give you a stable link, if your trees are really thick.

Thanks Carudden.

I just found out of another network that is about 2km from my house (this one has about 5 people connected) but I'll just get another antenna hooked up to a wireless card for this one - there is probably no way of tying this up with the connection between me and my friend?

Either both your friend and yourself connect up to the 5 user network, or you'll need two wireless connections;

1. You<---->5 user network
2. You<---->Friend

If your friend is within range of the other network, link him up there as well, then you don't need the extra wireless.
