Hi all!

I've just received an SMS from Telkom to tell me that my ADSL has been activated, so now it's time for me to get going on connecting everything up. I have done quite a bit of research here and on Google as to the route I should go in terms of routers and Wifi but would like some of your personal opinions on the route to go.

Here's a quick overview of the arrangement -

-ADSL line comes in at the front of the apartment, no other connections here except for the cordless home phone next to it. This is where the ADSL modem router would be installed.
-TV etc in another room (need 4 ports) needs to be on the same network but doesn't have an Ethernet connection but isn't far away from the primary router.

Can you help me on what hardware I need to buy for the two new devices which will work in harmony with one another? The network should be 300Mbps and the two devices can't be connected by Ethernet. I would like to have 3G failover via USB but that is a nice to have rather than an absolute requirement.

I've seen good and bad things about the Netgear DGN2200 and the D-Link looks like it might give me a bit if a headache.

Also, any one know if a lightning protector will slow the ADSL down?

Thanks for your help in advance!

I have a Netgear DGN2200,

Great router, never had a problem!
I have the same modem/router it works great no hassles at all and the fail over works.
The lightning protector should not slow the connection down i have used a few and never noticed a difference.
But if your line is marginal the extra cord may cause problems, best to try with and without the protector.
BTW one is supplied with the Netgear.

Stick with the Netgear - best networking hardware you can get with awesome support.

PM me if you need one, can get them at a reasonable price.

Thanks for the feedback guys, has anyone had the heat issues or the issues described here: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/297421-Netgear-DGN2200-and-updating-settings ?

Any suggestions on what to use as the AP for the TV connections? It'll need to connect to the primary wifi but not via Ethernet.

There's also need some pretty good talk about the TP-Link routers from DBG but my previous router (not connected to ADSL) was a Netgear DG834 which was simple and worked fine.

Thanks again!

I stream a HD (1MP) ipcamera over the wireless connection on my router and it works fine .
Never had heat problems and it sits on top of my PC.
You can set the wireless AP to 145 or 300 Mbps.
I am not saying its the best router/modem out there but it certainly gets the job done.

Hi all - thought I'd post feedback here of what happened with this setup. I purchased the Netgear DGN2200-M (for anyone reading, the -M in the model number specifies that it is the one capable of 3G fail over).

Went to all the trouble of flashing a Cisco E1000 with DD-WRT to configure the wireless bridge - this actually worked! The TV etc connected perfectly to the internet and it seemed to work. However, what I didn't realise that was to achieve the wireless bridge, the router would have to be configured with WEP security (it doesn't work on WPA2) and could only run at a max of 54Mbps. The wireless bridge also caused a huge degradation in speed of actual internet throughput, so I ended up canning the idea.

I've been running with the Netgear DGN2200-M and have tested the failover to 3G with a Huawei E367 - all works perfectly! Very happy with the router. Thanks for everyone's help!

@FNFal - FYI, the connector in the box is not a surge protector, only an ADSL POTS filter!

PS - these are the signal stats I'm getting with this router:

Line Attenuation
[Down] 29.5 db [Up] 16.7 db
Noise Margin
[Down] 17.6 db [Up] 12.0 db
