Hi, I am new here and was wondering if anybody knows just where and how and who around contracting a backbone from Telkom or whoever? This is for research and to make it a bit clearer the "project" for my studies i based on delivering a wireless solution to a agricultural comunity that includes a intranet and internet connection, but i have no idea how you get a backbone to ditribute to the clients within the community......

you're reinventing the wheel unfortunately, to provide a service such as this. is not just a matter of getting a "backbone" from Telkom, you need to get your necessary licenses from ICASA as well, which is probably more of a cost.

Ok, bar the ICASA regulations and services which i know of which i cant get estimates because i need to release a plan to them(and this is only studies) where would you suggest i start? I mean the area i targeted has farm lines(two short ones and a long one) and hardly mobile signal. There is major sectors at each side of the area. Thus i choose wireless that will have to start at one of these "hubs" if you want any sort of internet services to offer

Its impossible to recommend without doing a site survey ?
whether you have the technical skills to install, maintain the equipment ?
What type of services are you going to providing ? Internet + VoIP

Best thing would be to get a WiSP to provide you with a quotation
after doing a site survey of the selected area ?

You can goto the various distributor websites and get pricing but thats the easy part.
Just my 2c worth

Yeah, i guess the whole idea was to start with a intranet, meaning starting off connecting the different areas so that VOIP and other communication mediums could take place. The intranet will be a great way of marketing business and other services among the agricultural area and will server a nice teaching method especially technology.

After this i though what about adding the internet then as a separate medium for instance something small like 256/512 2g cap.

But what the hell, i work for HP so maybe i should just stick with my field, kind sad to start other thou the determining of the location and LOS all the maps, interviews and the development of the intranet and, and etc....it actually was kind of fun.

It does sound like a great idea but to sell it to the farmers is a tough one, tried it many years as farmers in the North Eastern Cape area were losing R1 million pa in stock theft, presented a possible solution to the farmers association - setting up security cameras on the 3 access road with a wireless backbone, it would have cost them less then the stock loss - waste of time .Stock loss is still a problem today.

In the Laingsburg - Seweweekspoort area, their is no mobile coverage, poor telkom service (rural telephone systems with less 9.6k connect speeds so much noise on the lines) that its makes it impossible to really communicate effectively .
One farmers pays Telkom for Satellite internet services R1700/month for 2 or 3 Gb capped service

Hi, Thank you. Just for interest sake.....With these WUG's what is the preferred band? And with regards to licences, if i understood it correct you need to pay a licence to be a public broadcasters and then you need a separate licence on the chosen band as well or not?

Licences are 10K a pop for ECNS and ECS licence but they give you the right to run a service (Network and services over that network) for 10years within a prescribed geographical area (Usually fairly large). In essence, R20,000 to run a legal Wisp, maybe R10,000 if you were not offering internet. There are NGO, Charity and otehr options but they are all a ball ache...

WUG's are license exempt, but does not provide internet or any business services. Good idea for running a farming intranet, to interconnect all the farms.

Excellent idea specifically for security cameras and backup voice traffic (Asterisk PBX)
I see the Camdeboo farming community near Graaf Reinet,Bedford,Cathcart in the Eastern Cape installed boom gates with cameras (standalone installations with DVR which can be stolen).

These unit had brick buildings, power, boom gates or a gate to open to identify the person as he gets out.
No infra-red cameras with solar units

The boom gates need to be replaced frequently as they get ridden over due to some drunk individual :D
