Does any1 know of a good WISP that i can use to online games (mainly DOTA) with a connection that is shared among 6 ppl???

Make sure u get one that gives you a public IP so you can host WC3 games if you need.

Doesn't a WISP allocate each one of their customers with an IP??

I assume that ADSL comes with an IP 'coz my friend can host with his ADSL

Alot of them will give you a private ip address thats non routable on the internet.

like 192.168.5.21 for example

Can you join a game if the host uses a private ip address

I thought that they give u an ip address and then reset it every 24 hrs...

please correct me if i'm wrong

A Private IP address is just that. Private

Its not routable on the rest of the internet. Thats the whole point.
Imagine how many people are using 192.168.1.1, now how is your traffic supposed to know which one its going to?
Simply, its not. It wont go anywhere.

headstrong, what city are you in?

I know in Cape Town Wireless Online can provide you with a public static IP address for about 200 rand extra.

They have pretty good speeds these days as well.

Im in cape town

Daffy, I hear your point...but.. I've hosted a game before on my 56K with an ip of 192.168.0.1 ....

... I think that your ISP allocates a different one for internet usage??? Please correct me if i'm wrong!!! .... sum1 from an ISP please!!!

Dynamically assigned by DHCP perhaps... from a pool of IP's

Private = your internal network
Public = Internet address
Dynamic = public IP that changes
Static = public that remains constant

You NAT (Network Address Translation) your private IP(s) to the public assigned by the ISP. If your ISP NAT's your assigned IP, you will not be able to host. When you decide on a service ask the ISP.

Dotco assigns a dynamic IP with RADIUS

nondeplume says that dunamic ips are public...

daffy objects...

Can sum1 please cast a deciding vote...? :)

Cars.
You get fast cars, you get slow cars.
But just because something is fast, doesn't mean its a car..

Dynamic/Static, just refers to the way the IP is assigned.
Public/Private, refers to whether its routable on the internet or not.

headstrong - I'm not a gamer so i cant say for sure but....

you need a public IP address - an IP address that anyone conencted to the internet can "connect" to

One gets both static and dynamic public IP addresses you can use both for gaming.

......on a side note you can also get dynamic or static private IP addresses but if you have one of those then you cant host a server on the internet

ask the ISP what the IP address you will be allocated is if they say 192.168.x.x or 172.x.x.x (yes i know not completely correct but we simplifying here) or 10.x.x.x
then it is a private IP you cant use it for your purpose

Daffy is right about getting dynamic privates. I was just trying to simplify things.

Here is your solution. Tell us which ISP/Service/Package you are considering and we will tell you if you can host or not.

Openweb.co.za

Meet you best friend go www.hamachi.cc
