forgot about the proof part, i bet non of the guys running the cracked 2.9.27 or 2.9.6 versions will be able to upgrade their software. For anyone scanning with Mikrotik software, you will see a version of 2.9.27 or 2.9.6 come up, thats a dead giveaway of cracked software. Isnt there something that can be done to commercial companies running illegal software? Heavy fines should be imposed!!

hi Xarion - my technical knowledge does not extend to how you would go about showing that this was the case - is there a fairly straightforward way to prove this?

edit: okay - so you would want to look more closely at people running those versions....

It would be great some legal action be taken, all these wisps claim to be perfectly legal. I will in any way i can try to shut them down or make life hard for them just as they do for the rest of the ISM users and since we cant do that from them selling commercial services in non-commercial frequency bands point of view it will have to be some other way.

But I'm sure tomorrow i'll do a scan and all the softwares will be legit. lol

not true. I have a RB532 running on 2.9.27 (not for wireless purposes admittedly) and has a legit license I dont what to upgrade it because of the 190 day uptime :D

but yes generally that is the case with those versions... after all if it is a good WISP they would have upgraded their MT versions to stop/limit/control the p2p traffic.

I have not had the luxury of time to visit the forum for quite a while - just picked up on this thread today. Would our reputable suppliers sell us product without licensed software - I think not! 24-7 Online is a member of Wapa and we certainly do not run any cracked Mikrotik software. I will ask these suppliers their opinion on your method of establishing what "cracked software" is and revert back later.

Herewith feedback from one of our suppliers: All mikrotik boards are sold with the license already on it and the price of the license forms part of the price of the board. Our supplier will not run the risk of selling a board with cracked software as the customer will most definately be dissatisfied when the board cannot be upgraded.

This is quite a difficult one to address. I have seen a few systems running 2.9.27 that were legal software licenses. That was an extremely stable version and some operators have been reluctant to upgrade. On the other hand it is often a dead giveaway for an illegally licensed system. I would not ever like to think that any established wisp is running illegal software. It is easy enough to check though. From a terminal on Mikrotik issue the

/system license print

command. It should show something like this:

software-id: "Y0FR-BHN"
upgradable-to: v3.x
nlevel: 4
features:

if it is nlevel 6 and features extra-channels than it is most likely an illegal version

And there we have it from mister MT SA...

And add to that MikroTik's licensing policy changes post 2.9.13 (I think - thereabouts).

Prior to that version, one could only upgrade for a year. If your year ran out before the policy change by MT, the only safe way to get that version on to the new policy and upgradeable would be to go to the site and re-install the OS.

Some sites may be just too remote to do this, and sometimes it also may not be worth the bother if nothing 'fancy' is running on that router...

It's a long shot making a statement like that, and the OS is as you say more than affordable enough not to take that chance. Any WiSPs who do can't be too serious about themselves...
