The bittorrent protocol was designed to disadvatage you if you're not sharing. So by closing the bittorrent ports, your client and all the other bittorrent clients throttle your speeds, because you're a leecher.

Dorris, I know all that - I was just assuming (for simplicity's sake) that we're using a computer with the modem directly attached.

For what it's worth, I forwarded ports 2704-6 to my machine (the ports that ctorrent listen on, amongst others) to my PC, restarted my current torrent, and it seems to have picked up.

nonroker, I can see how that can work that way (seem my previous post).

im still not satisfied with the speed i do a lot of work for customers on ADSL and it is stll running at 5kbs between us some things have improved however but it is not good enough
 
uh huh...
I feel the same way loosecannon... has improved but give me what I m apaying for then I am happy.
Not some half assed excuse of a broadband service.

What you said is exactly what I'm doing when port forwarding on my firewall. I fail to see the difference, but you put it so nicely that I'll just let you do the explaining.
