Phone ahead to the branch and inform them of the amount you want to withdraw.

Very risky... why not EFT?

Yes. It's your money. You pay them to look after it. They will give it back to you when you require. All you need do is prove you are you and make your request in writing (ie fill in a little form). EZ-PZ.

They will charge you a lot to withdraw from the bank.
Increase your limit to the sum that you need.

Less than 10 thousand? Use an ATM. I think you only need to go to the bulk tellers if it's over 15 000 or something. And you only need to phone ahead and arrange if it's like R100k or more.

Rather draw your ATM limit over a few days if you have the time, or phone them to increase the limit. As soon as you walk up to a bank teller, they charge you ridiculous amounts of money for everything. To draw big cash at a branch will probably cost you over 10% in fees.

EDIT: For me, it is R25 + 1.5% of the cash value, but for some reason I remember it being more when I actually went to do it. I wanted R16k and it would have cost me over R1000 to draw with Nedbank at the time.

I'm not sure with absa, but standard bank once advised me it's cheaper to increase my withdraw limit and withdraw from an atm rather than from inside the bank... also I'd suggest going with somebody as sometimes you get people inside the bank telling outside people to but a mark on you and possible highjack... happened a few times...

Very true. Especially if you do this regularly. They stay outside the bank apparently doing nothing, but they watch the tellers looking for cash in hand. Then they whatsapp their guy ouside who robs you at gunpoint quietly when you get to your car. Looking over your shoulder is pointless. If the informer follows you, it will always be at an undetectable distance, and It is always a fresh face that robs you. Then they just slip R100 to the car guard to keep quiet.

Just tell us which ATM and when so that we can watch over you to make sure nothing happens to our little zizopie.

If you must have cash and can't EFT, then ATM cash is generally cheapest. But your bank might not easily increase your ATM limit. Speak to them.

At ABSA, the teller usually shouts "override" loudly to a supervisor on the other end of the section. This allows the teller to access the funds while ironically informing everyone in the bank that you'll be exiting with more cash than the regular cash withdrawal amount, discretion is not their strength.
